Harlan County (5-0 overall, 2-0 vs. 13th Region competition) The Black Bears continue to roll, picking up wins over Bell County (59-29), Middlesboro (80-41) and Perry Central (82-75). Cameron Carmical continues to shine, averaging 21.2 points per game while Treyce Spurlock is averaging 17.8 points per game and Tyrese Simmons is scoring 13.8 points per contest. 2. Corbin (3-0, 0-0) The Redhounds picked up two wins over the week by defeating both Lexington Catholic (78-75) and Rockcastle County (67-65) by a combined five points. Junior star Andrew Taylor was held to 17 points against the Rockets, but is still averaging more than 29 points per game. 3. North Laurel (4-0, 0-0) The Jaguars are off to their first 4-0 start since former coach Kenny Woods had them at 4-0 during the 2003-04 campaign. Mr. Basketball candidate Peyton Broughton is putting on a show so far this young season. He scored 39 points and pulled down 14 rebounds during North Laurel’s 82-64 win over Ashland Blazer. He is now averaging more than 35 points per game and more than 12 rebounds per game. 4. Knox Central (3-1, 1-0) The Panthers took a tough loss on the road against Boyle County (83-73), but still hung in there against the Rebels despite seeing four starters foul out and the fifth starter finish with four fouls. 5. South Laurel (5-1, 2-0) The Cardinals dominated 50th District foe Whitley County, 69-39, and followed that with a win over Highlands. But Boone County rallied from a nine-point deficit to knock off South Laurel at home (59-58), thanks in part to a last-second 3-pointer. 6. Clay County (3-1, 1-0) The Tigers are off to a nice start, and look to be improving each game. They defeated Cordia, 66-62, as Ryan Rogers scored 23 points while Jacob Curry added a 15-point scoring effort. Trevor Sams added 11 points int he win and Logan Gabbard finished with 10 points. 7. Pineville (4-0, 2-0) The Mountain Lions and wins over Red Bird (83-61) and Phelps (44-41) this past week. They had four starters out against Phelps, but still managed to pull out the win in Jackson County’s PRTC Classic. 8. Whitley County (2-1, 0-1) The Colonels took one of the chin this past week, losing to 50th District foe South Laurel, 69-39. Dylan Wilson led the way with a 10-point effort in the loss. 9. Lynn Camp (7-0, 3-0) The Wildcats are off to their second straight 7-0 start under Dinky Phipps. The Wildcats have been led by senior guard Bruce Hopkins, Max Burd and Jacob Bundy’s outside shooting. 10. Jackson County (4-1, 1-1) People might be sleeping on the Generals a bit. They’ve won four in a row, and are led in scoring by Hunter Bowling’s 20.3 scoring average. Tanner Harris follows with a 16.8 scoring average.
