Newport Central Catholic Powder Puff Game

Featured Replies

Just because the Breds had a Bye this week doesn't mean there wasn't football up on the "hill", as the junior and senior girls did battle in the annual Powder Puff game. Just like last year the Class of 2017, who won going away last year as juniors, come from 13 down for the 26 -19 victory.

During pre-game interviews with Junior Head Coach, Brennen Hall, he said and I qoute, "Meg Martin won't do nothing"......well all she did was was throw two touchdown passes, one to Taylor Tolle and the other to Rachel McDonald.

Senior Defensive Backs and Wide Receiver coach, Brian Wells was well on his way to being fired before the game was over. In his pre-game interview his DB's weren't looking has good as advertised, however, things quickly changed after Natalie Barth's 100 yards interception return for a touchdown. The DB's would pick-off Breen 3 times. He was SPOT ON his call for short passes for the wideouts, as both Tolle and Olivia Schalk's TD's were short passes, that went for long runs after the catch.

Junior QB, Lexy Breen with a very nice game, as she connected on a pair of 40 yard TD passes, one to Alexa Pangallo, and the other to Mikah Freppon.

Juniors score right away on the Breen to Pangallo pass, the 2pt. conversion was no good. Then following an Erin Bunzel 98 yard INT return to the 2, Margarite Lewis takes the Breen hand-off to paydirt aided by a NASTY block from Erica Owens. Jenna Albrands xpt right down the middle, and the juniors are up 13-0.

The Seniors get on the board, as Haley Meyers throws a quick out to Olivia Schalk and she takes it 70 yards to the promised land...2pt. conversion was no good. A few minutes later the juniors have it 4th and 18, when Lexy Breen hits Mikah Freppon for a 50 yard completion. However, on the very next play Natalie Barth picks off Breen for the 100 yard INT return for the score, the 2pt. conversion was good, and the seniors jump on top 13-12. Right before the half, Martin hits Tolle who evades a would be tackler, and outruns everyone to the endzone. The xpt. attempt is wide right, but the seniors gain a 20-13 advantage.

The juniors get within 1, 20-19, following Breen's 40 yard strike to Freppon, but the 2pt. conversion and 1 point lead is no good. With under 3:00 to go, Meg Martin hits Rachel McDonald 30 yards down field, and the 6'2" McDonald easily out jumps two defenders and runs the final 5 yards for the score, the xpt is no good and the seniors take a 7 point lead.

In the closing seconds of the game, the juniors move the ball into the seniors redzone, but time expires before they can go any further.

1st Half

Jr's - Breen 40 yd pass to Pangallo (2pt no good)

Jr's - Lewis 2 yd run (Albrand kick)

Sr's - Meyers 70 yd pass to Schalk (2pt no good)

Sr's - Barth 100 yd INT return (2pt good)

Sr's - Martin 70 pass to Tolle (2 pt no good)

2nd Half

Jr's - Breen 40 pass to Freppon (2pt. no good)

Sr's - Martin 35 pass to McDonald (2pt. no good)
