Class 5A Notebook (9/28/2016)

Featured Replies

While there were no top ten matchups in class 5A’s week 5, along with no movement in this week’s top ten, there were some games and scores to take note of. Let’s take a look at the Pulaski County vs. Madison Southern game first. Pulaski County has been working their way back up in the rankings after their early season blowout loss to 6A Scott County. Madison Southern on the other hand has been hanging around just outside of the BGP Top Ten for several weeks now, looking for a way in. The 205 yards passing from Matt Hendricks, along with a balanced rushing attack was enough for the Maroons to get the win on the road 28-14. But the real story of the game was the Maroons defense, which allowed less than 200 yards of total offense and forced 4 fumbles, recovering them all. The Madison Southern team shouldn’t hang their heads in defeat though as they still look to be in control of their district, they just happened to run into a solid Pulaski County squad that is seemingly getting better as the season progresses.

Another game that lived up to the pregame talk was Highlands vs. 6A #3 Simon Kenton. Highlands was the clear underdog in this one and most people people seemingly though this would be a slaughter. Well, those people were wrong, as there was no slaughter and you could argue that neither team’s defense got on the bus as well. However if you like to watch a brilliant display of offense this was the game to attend this week. These two teams combined for 130 total points and nearly 1400 yards of total offense! Simon Kenton pulled away in the second half and won this won 77-53, but I don’t think many people expected a score like this one. The 1-5 Bluebirds get some much needed rest this week before starting district play in week 7.

The only other top ten team to lose last week was Covington Catholic as they lost to St. Francis DeSales of Columbus Ohio 49-17. If you know nothing about St. Francis DeSales and are just looking at the score, you are probably thinking that the BGP 5A #2 Colonels may be a fraud. However DeSales is, 5-0 and the number one team in Ohio’s Division 3, per the OHSAA computer rankings. They are also a top 10 team in the state regardless of class. The Colonels were still holding their own at the half, trailing only 28-17. However DeSales proved to be too much in the second half as they blanked the Colonels 21-0. In the end, DeSales running back Alonzo Booth along with Covington Catholic’s 5 turnovers left the Colonels defense gassed and unable to slow down the Stallions. Just like Highlands, the Colonels get a much needed week of rest prior to starting district play.

Game of the Week

This weeks game of the week is without a doubt #3 Christian County vs. #9 Owensboro. Christian County traveled to Marshall County last week and posted another impressive win, while Owensboro took the week off to rest and watch who knows how many hours of game film in preparation for this one. Christian County and Owensboro both have a common opponent in Bowling Green, Christian County gave the purples one of their toughest tests of the season in a 22-42 defeat. The Purples however blanked the Red Devils 47-0. Owensboro, who was once ranked #2 in the class 5A BPG rankings is looking to prove that they are as good as advertised.
