It may not have the pomp and circumstance of when a new pope is selected, but on Friday night in Class 1A the Defending Champs were demoted in convincing fashion by the Paintsville Tigers. Russellville edges into the cat bird seat, but it is not without debate, as the Panthers needed all 48 minutes to survive 2A Butler County in a shootout. Beechwood secured a hard fought win over Somerset to assume the ongoing Runner-Up role and the aforementioned Paintsville Tigers are quickly making their rush up the rankings at the third spot. Fresh on the heels of defeat there will be no rest for Pikeville as the Panthers face their second straight Top 10 1A team in as many weeks as they must now withstand Fairview's challenge.

Class 1A

1. Russellville at 4A Logan County

2. Beechwood vs. 4A Franklin County

3. Paintsville at Ridgeview (VA)

4. Pikeville at #8 Fairview

5. Raceland at 4A Greenup County

6. Hazard at 2A Somerset

7. Nicholas County vs. 3A Lewis County

8. Fairview vs. #4 Pikeville

9. Holy Cross (Louisville) vs. 2A #4 DeSales

10. Kentucky Country Day at 2A Carroll County

People have started to get on board the Class 2A bandwagon after yet another impressive week of Non-District domination. Mayfield, Danville, and CAL both secured dominating wins against 3A traditional powers, OCath took down heavily ranked 5A rival Owensboro, and Butler County and NewCath both turned heads in narrow defeats to heavily favored foes. This week though may be the stiffest test for some of the class' top teams as Danville, Mayfield, and NewCath all really stretch their legs with probably the best Non-District tests on their respective schedules. Glasgow has opened the season on a roll, expect their mettle to be tested against a stout 4A foe.

Class 2A

1. Mayfield at 6A #9 McCracken County

2. Christian Academy- Louisville at 5A Oldham County

3. Danville vs. 3A #2 Corbin

4. DeSales at 1A #9 Louisville Holy Cross

5. Owensboro Catholic at South Spencer (IN)

6. Newport Central Catholic vs. 3A #1 Belfry

7. Covington Holy Cross at Taft (OH)

8. Lexington Christian Academy vs. 3A Estill County

9. Glasgow vs. 4A Allen County- Scottsville

10. Butler County vs. 5A Apollo

Whereas Class 2A has received laud for their early season successes, the same cannot be said for a Class 3A which has seen most of their top powerhouses start the year below the .500 mark. Lexington Catholic, Central, and Boyle County all took huge beatings last week continuing this trend. Two teams who have navigated seamlessly have been Belfry and Corbin. With that said both the Pirates and Redhounds will be put to the test this week against very good 2A teams on the road. Lexington Catholic and Central continue their brutal scheduling, and meanwhile the de-facto Top 5 Garrard County squad will be challenged mightily by 4A Rockcastle County.

Class 3A

1. Belfry at 2A #6 Newport Central Catholic

2. Corbin at 2A #3 Danville

3. Lexington Catholic at 5A #3 Covington Catholic

4. Central at 6A #6 St. Xavier

5. Garrard County at 4A Rockcastle County

6. Caldwell County vs. 1A Crittenden County

7. Boyle County at 5A Anderson County

8. Russell at 4A Ashland

9. Bardstown vs. 5A Nelson County

10. Waggener vs. 2A Shawnee

Few classes have shown the balance of good teams from top to bottom as Class 4A, but until this Friday everyone simply accepted that South Warren were in a class to themselves. Greenwood just changed all that. A fast start by the Gators and some key injuries culminated in the demise of the State's longest winning streak and a new sheriff in town being appointed in the top spot, Johnson Central. The Golden Eagles made their second statement win in successive weeks. That same 5A Greenwood team remains a nemesis as this week they take their sights at the fourth ranked Franklin-Simpson Wildcats. South Warren will have to battle to avoid a shocking "losing streak" as 6A Central Hardin will be no slouch.

Class 4A

1. Johnson Central vs. South Charleston (WV)

2. South Warren at 6A #10 Central Hardin

3. Wayne County vs. 3A Bell County

4. Franklin-Simpson at 5A #4 Greenwood

5. Hopkinsville vs. 2A Murray

6. John Hardin vs. 6A Pleasure Ridge Park

7. Shelby County vs. 5A North Bullitt

8. Knox Central vs. 5A Harlan County

9. Mercer County vs. 5A #8 Southwestern

10. Collins -- OPEN

The Purples are now home to the State's Longest Winning Streak (I think I have heard that before?) after they avenged their only set back from 2015 by making short work of St. Xavier. Outside of the boys with the gold helmets though this class continues to spawn drama and turnover. The latest victims were Owensboro and Highlands falling . With every notable loss though comes a seemingly equal and opposite reaction as Greenwood defeated 4A #1 South Warren and Covington Catholic upset a strong squad from the Buckeye State. Owensboro will now face the dubious task of trying to rebound by challenging the king. Southwestern earned a statement win this past week, but there is no rest for the weary as they must follow it up by taking on 4A #9 Mercer County. Highlands looks to avoid 1-3 against a ranked 6A Ryle.

Class 5A

1. Bowling Green at #7 Owensboro

2. Christian County at 3A Fort Campbell

3. Covington Catholic vs. 3A #3 Lexington Catholic

4. Greenwood vs. 4A Franklin-Simpson

5. Highlands at 6A #7 Ryle

6. Fern Creek vs. 6A Butler

7. Owensboro vs. #1 Bowling Green

8. Southwestern at 4A #9 Mercer County

9. South Oldham vs. 4A North Oldham

10. Pulaski County at 4A Russell County

Trinity is pretty good. The Rocks rocked the world of Lafayette and set up a meeting with #2 defending champs Male. If Trinity wins it will create a distance to the rest of the pack that would make Secretariat take notice. Scott County is feeling good after weathering a Highlands tussle, but must quickly get back to work against National Powerhouse Elder, OH. Outside of the battle of #1 vs. #2, the story line this week will be the back half of the Top 10 being challenged. DuPont Manual has a BYE and as a result will be the only team in the 6-10 range not feeling a challenge from a Top 5 team from a lower classification.

Class 6A

1. Trinity vs. #2 Male

2. Male at #1 Trinity

3. Simon Kenton at 5A Dixie Heights

4. Lafayette at Boone County

5. Scott County vs. Cincinnati Elder (OH)

6. St. Xavier vs. 3A #4 Louisville Central

7. Ryle vs. 5A #5 Highlands

8. DuPont Manual -- OPEN

9. McCracken County vs. 2A #1 Mayfield

10. Central Hardin vs. 4A #2 South Warren
