Week Three – The Season Hits Full Swing

District play is still a few weeks off but the third week of high school football brought us a number of high profile games. Central Kentucky’s top two teams were each facing the two teams that hold the most state championship trophies – Lafayette went up against the Trinity Shamrocks and Scott County took on the Bluebirds from Highlands. Lafayette and the ‘Rocks at home in a match-up that may come around again in the post season. Trinity kept the Generals bottled up all night. UK-commit Walker Wood was held to 22 yards rushing and 65 yards of passing. With this clinic against a top Kentucky 6A team, some are saying Trinity will not lose to a Kentucky team this year. Lafayette has a struggling Boone County next before the showdown with the Scott County Cardinals on September 16th.

Scott County did get by the traditionally strong Bluebirds of Highlands in the end, 42-33. But three fumbles and a struggling pass defense made this a tight game to the end. Scott County hosts Cincinnati Elder next week, followed by the afore mentioned big game with Lafayette.

The game-of-the-week was the annual Boyle-Danville game. What was expected to be a dog-fight was anything but. Zach Dampier hit David Walker twice in the first half as part an onslaught that resulted in a running clock before half-time. The Admirals have a senior-heavy team that seems to be on a mission. Beating the rival Rebels was part of that mission. The Ads can not celebrate too long, as they have a strong Corbin team coming to town next week. The Rebels travel to Anderson County still in search of their first win this season.

In another rivalry game Mercer County came out on top of Anderson County, 41 to 31. There are some ‘dynamics’ between these two teams this year that added to the interest. The Titans now have two good wins in a row after dropping their opener to Central Hardin. They host a good Southwestern team next week. Anderson County will host Boyle County Friday.

The Lexington Catholic Knights traveled to 4A Johnson Central. With a 54-27 loss, the Knights Achilles heal was in full view – trouble with a strong running game. The Knights go north next week and play Covington Catholic under the lights.

Football fans in Madison County are enjoying a good year so far. The county’s two largest schools each sport 3-0 records. Madison Southern blanked a previously unbeaten Western Hills, 40 to 0. Madison Central beat Bourbon County 15 to 0. The 5A Eagles host Bourbon next week in a game will provide a measuring stick against their local rival. Madison Central hosts a struggling Bryan Station.

Lexington Christian continues to roll with a win over Green County, 48 to 8. The Eagles have scored 32 or more points in their three games this year and averaging 45 points a game. Tates Creek gained their first win in overtime against Dunbar, 41 to 35.

Nicholas County had an impressive win over previously unbeaten Eminence. The Bluejackets posted 55 points against the visiting Warriors who had held their first two opponents scoreless. The 14 points by the Warriors where the first ones scored on Nicholas County this year. So how good is 1A Nicholas County? We need some input from some Bluejacket followers.

Casey County had their game last week cancelled. This week the Rebels handed the Russell County Lakers their first loss of the season. The Rebels were 4-6 during the regular season last year. Are they much improved over last year?

Game of the Week

#4 Henry Clay at Tates Creek, September 9, 7:30

Gauging the 6As in Fayette County is always a challenge. Is Henry Clay really a top team? Is Tates Creek a solid team facing a tough schedule? This game should provide some answers.
