Week Two - Early Tests and Head-to-Head

This week’s games included strong tests for a number of teams and some defining head to head matches and in some cases – both. The headliner of the week was the Lafayette-Boyle County matchup in the Rebel Bowl in Boyle County. The game got off to a late start due to early evening storms but when done in the early hours of Sunday morning #1 Lafayette showed why they are number 1 in the rankings. And #6 Boyle County showed they are more than just rebuilding this year. In the opening game of the Rebel Bowl #7 Mercer notched a solid victory over the traditionally tough Bell County Bobcats.

In another early test, #2 Scott County won big over 2015 5A runner-up Pulaski County 48 to 19. The Traditional Bank Bluegrass Bowl featured the next two teams in the Lex-CKY Power Rankings. #3 Lexington Catholic was up 28-0 against 6A powerhouse St. X. But the Tigers, in their opening game, got over the early shock and ran off 42 straight #4 Henry Clay, in their opener, had trouble getting out of the gate against Ryle and found themselves down 28 – 0. But the Blue Devils fought back in the second half and fell just short 34 to 28.

With a win over 5A Southwestern, Danville moved to #5 this week. The Admirals and Boyle County Rebels will sort out who is tops in Boyle County next week. #8 Anderson County gets into the win column with a win over 6A George Rogers Clark. Moving into the top 10 this week is #9 6A Madison Central and #10 2A Lexington Christian. The Indians are getting it done with defense with a 14 – 12 win over Dunbar. Lexington Christian is putting up the points with an average of 44 points in their first two games.

Moving up, moving down and notables

6A Bryan Station and 6A Tates Creek both took big losses this week and it shows in the rankings. The Fayette 6As are going to be difficult to gauge this year, as they were last year. They tend to beat-up on each other pretty good in district and non-district inter-6A games and these two programs have upped their early schedule with some strong tests. Station fell hard to Simon-Kenton 50 to 7. And the Commodores travelled to 3A Belfry and lost 48 to 12.

5A Madison Southern moved to 2-0 with a win over 3A Garrard County in a key Central Kentucky matchup. 3A Western Hills goes to 2-0 with a nice win over in county rival 4A Franklin County. 4A East Jessamine moves to 2-0 beating Lincoln County 32 to 27. 2A Clinton County stays perfect so far with a 43-8 win over 2A Trimble County. Russell County goes to 2-0 beating LaRue County.

Senior heartbreak

At least 3 starting seniors had their high school career’s ended far too early in the first week of play. East Jessamine star Justin McIntire lead the Jaguars in rushing and tackles in 2015. He suffered a broken leg less than 4 minutes into the 2016 season. Two senior defensive starters for Lexington Catholic also suffered season ending injuries last week. Eric Foster suffered an ACL injury on opening second half kickoff. Co-captain Austin Lauterbach lead the Knights with 8 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles last week also suffered a season ending ACL injury.

Injuries are part of the game, but for these three players, and probably few others across the state, the 2016 season and high school careers ended all too quickly.
