Great game. Trenton Russell for Magoffin had 26 and 12. Jaren Lovely had 10 and 4 assists. Dalton Peters for Magoffin had 10 rebounds.

 

JC wins 18th 57th District Title (Most of any team breaking tie with Pikeville). Mason Blair tied school record with 103 Made 3FG (Robbie Obryan - class of 1992). Mason hit 102 last season. Both these teams are very good and will be tough outs come tourney time.

 

Just a well played game all the way around in front of an absolutely packed house at Paintsville.

Coach McKenzie has now won 4 District Titles, tying Wendell Wallen for most all time in Johnson Central history.

He also has 4 regional titles and 1 regional runner up in his previous 8 years going into this one (6 of those years being 20 win campaigns). Man can flat out coach and is still very young!

He is a good coach! Also been blessed with a ton of talent in those 8 years. It takes a good coach to be able to use that talent in a positive way. Several years JC has had a ton of talent but weren't able to win, coach McKenzie has changed that and JC is a Power again in the region.

He always plays a tough schedule. Has coached through the Shelby Valley state title team (3 straight regional titles) and coached against the likes of Justin Johnson (WKU - was in the 57th) Ray Kosongo (Tennessee - met him twice in the regional tournament), Elisha Justice (UofL), Landon Slone (UK), etc. etc. (All from the 15th Region). He has had talent, but he does an unbelievable job of developing it as well. His teams always get better and he always gets kids to the next level that sometimes many thought couldnt play there when they were young.

 

There is something to be said when everyone is gunning for you and you still deliver. Lawrence County is getting that treatment this year - Coach McKenzie has had it for the last 4 and delivered every time. At 34 years old, he is nearly at 200 wins and has been named COY across various media outlets numerous times to include Head Coach of the KY/OH All Star game two years ago.

 

Whats the point? I would say he gets the most out of and develops his talent, more so than he has been blessed with talent. It goes back to the old bear bryant saying. "He can take his and beat yours and take yours and beat his". Man is a great coach, never takes credit (gives it to kids), is humble and the kids love him.
