The ’Ville to win: Pikeville visits Paintsville with state finals on line

Aaron Snyder | The Daily Independent

Paintsville won the battle, but who will win the war?

Pikeville turned to a Battaile (pronounced battle) shortly after suffering a 23-22 overtime loss to Paintsville on Sept. 4. The defeat bumped Pikeville down the Class A rankings as the Tigers took the vacated No. 1 spot. They’ve not relinquished grip since.

While sophomore quarterback Wyatt Battaile has supplied the Panthers with “another dimension,” as coach Chris McNamee called it, their task remains tall at what figures to be a raucous Memorial Field on Friday night.

Paintsville (13-0) will take a crack at advancing to its fourth state championship game in history. The program is without a title. Pikeville (11-2) has three state rings to its name.

Tigers coach Joe Chirico expects “one of the largest crowds in I don’t know how long.”

Bill Mike Runyon, the Tigers’ veteran basketball general and former football assistant and head coach, offered some assistance.
