The Lexington/Central Kentucky Power Rankings – Oct. 18 Sponsored by Jess-105.9

The Rankings

10) Lexington Christian (2A / 6 – 2 / Streak 2W / Next Opp: Danville (D, SN))

The Lexington Christian Eagles come back into the top 10 with two wins after a short two game losing streak. suffered their first loss to a previously winless Walton-Verona at home with a score of 28-27. Next up is 1A Fairview at Fairview.

9) Paris (1A / 9 – 0 / Streak 9W / Next Opp: Bethlehem (Oct 30th), SN)

The Greyhounds get a key and major win over previously undefeated Bishop Brossart at 34 – 21. They finish district play 4 and 0. The Greyhounds are off this upcoming weekend. Senior night will be October 30th against Bethlehem.

8) Franklin County (4A / 6 – 2 / Streak – 2L / Next Opp: North Oldham County (D, SN))

The Flyers were off this past weekend. Next up is a 3-5 North Oldham County for senior night at Franklin County.

7) Wayne County (4A / 7 – 2 / Streak 5W / Next Opp: Monroe County (Oct 30th))

The Wayne County goes undefeated in district with a 51-8 win over Russell County. The Cardinals close season play against 2A Monroe County after a week off.

6) Danville (2A / 7 – 1 / Streak 5W / Next Opp: Lexington Christian (D))

The Admirals blank Middlesboro, 56 to 0 and go 2-0 in the district. Danville comes north to face Lexington Christian for the district championship and for the top ranking of a 2A team in Central Kentucky. The Admirals host Frankfort in the final game of the season.

5) Boyle County (3A / 7 – 1 / Streak – 1L / Next Opp: Western Hills (D))

The Rebels had the date circled since last year. But payback for Knights for the only Rebel loses last year did not happen. The Rebels now regroup for their final district game against Western Hills at home. Senior night will be against Paul Lawrence Dunbar.

4) Lexington Catholic (3A / 5 – 3 / Streak 2W / Next Opp: Garrard County (D, SN))

The Knights go into Boyle County a major underdog but come out controlling their playoff future with the 31 to 24 win. The Knights seem to be improving every week. The defense held Boyle to almost half their season average and the lowest scoring total since the Rebels played Central Hardin. The offense post 31 points against a highly regarded defense. The Knights will have their senior night when they host Garrard County this weekend. The will close the regular season at Southwestern the following week.

3) Bryan Station (6A / 6 – 3 / Streak – 1L / Next Opp: Henry Clay (D, SN))

Defenders struggle against Scott County. Injuries were a factor in the loss with Andre Davis being less than 100% at game time and Devon Key going down early in the contest. These two players have been the catalyst to the Defender offense. Let’s hope both young men are ready for playoffs. The final regular season game is this weekend against Henry Clay in a district game on senior night.

2) Lafayette (6A / 7 – 2 / Streak – 3W / Next Opp: Tates Creek (D))

The Generals go 2-0 in the district with a win against Madison Central, 45 – 28. The regular season and district play concludes at Tates Creek this weekend. Congratulations to General Quarterback Walker Wood in accepting offer from University of Kentucky.

1) Scott County (6A / 7 – 1 / Streak – 4W / Next Opp: Paul Lawrence Dunbar (D))

The Cardinals are back on top with a 40 to 24 win over Bryan Station and the first loss for Boyle County. The Cardinals travel to PLD this weekend in the final district game. They close at home against Covington Catholic.

Ranking Notes

Lexington Catholics upset of Boyle County shuffles the top part of the rankings. The Knights leveraged their outstanding offensive talent and improving defense to get the win but some stats from the game still show a team that has progress to make. Only 12 first downs and 1-7 and 0-4 on 3rd and 4th down conversions are concerning for a top team.

Bryan Station’s Devon Key went down very early in the Scott County game. A Defender team without Key may not hold it currently high ranking.

Lexington Christian comes back into the rankings with two wins. Consistency in terms of wins seems to be at a premium in Central Kentucky. Most other bubble teams lost opening up the slot.

I looked hard at Montgomery County who is 5-3 and defeated Anderson County this past weekend, 14 to 10. But there are few quality matchups in the Indians schedule.

Game of the Week

Danville (2A #6) vs Lexington Christian (2A #10), October 23, 7:30. Lexington Christian Academy

Both teams come in 2-0 in the district. This will decide the district champion, playoff positioning and bragging rights to being the top 2A team in Central Kentucky.
