Belfry @ Richlands, VA Jamboree Results

Belfry traveled to Richlands, VA for the third straight year for the jamboree they put on.

The two other teams competing were Graham, VA and George Wythe, VA

The format was 10 play series... each Varsity Offense got 2 series, each Varsity Defense the same. The JV got 2 series each way as well. The scores below are for the Varsity series only.

Belfry 5 or 6 TD's

Graham 0

My contact arrived after it had already began and Belfry had scored at least once..possibly twice.

Graham was the weakest team there... compare them to maybe a Middle of the Pack Kentucky 2A team like a Betsy Layne or a Gallatin County. Belfry had no issue moving the ball with ease and Graham struggled to move the ball at all.

Belfry 3 TD's

George Wythe 1 TD

Compare George Wythe to like a 8-12 ranked 1A team like a Lou. Holy Cross or Fairview.

GW did something noone else could, they had a long rushing TD on a counter play that Belfry got sucked in on. Outside of that play GW really could not move the ball at all. This was the third game and Belfry played it a little different giving Freshman Avery Browning more snaps at QB with the 1's. TJ Dotson scored all three TD's..two rushing..one receiving. Belfry moved it pretty effortlessly.

Belfry 2 TD's

Richlands 1 TD

Richlands was an excellent test. They reached the 2A Semi-Finals last year and return 8 starters each way as well as adding 2 or 3 big time transfers. This is the best Richlands team since Belfry has been going down there, and probably the closest a team has played Belfry in this event. Compare Richlands to a NewCath, and a cross between '14 Corbin and '15 Russell.

Belfry's first offensive series didn't accomplish much. Richlands kind of surprised them with their ability to get off the ball and it led to a "spirited" pep talk of the OLine after the first ten plays.

Richlands scored on their first possession using their intermediate passing game and their impressive QB on a pretty pitch and catch with a toetap in the endzone.

Belfry's second offensive series they scored twice. A short run by Derek Wellman and a beautiful run by QB Noah Corbett on the belly series when Richlands collapsed on the FB.

Richlands second series resulted in an INT... the Blue Tornadoes gained a couple 1st Downs but not nearly to the success of drive one. Richlands was unable to run on Belfry outside of a couple QB scrambles.

Belfry looked about exactly as expected. Dominant at times, rusty at others Haywood basically only played a base read Defense and kept a constant shuttle of subs coming. Offensively he kept it simple with the exception of airing it out more than you will normally see come the regular season. Corbett looked really good at QB for the most part with the exception of missing a couple sure TD's by overthrowing wide open receivers, he also made some pretty throws and had a TD pass.

Belfry was by far the deepest team and their 2nd String/JV outscored the other teams pretty significantly.

Belfry used about 7 different running options in the Varsity portion (Corbett, Fletcher, Wellman, Willis, Dotson,Catron, Adkins) and each one scored a TD. TJ Dotson had the best night scoring 3-4 times on the ground and once receiving.

No significant injuries for Belfry. Devin Varney (Starting CB) was out with a hyperextended knee and Horton cut his finger. Speaking of Horton... unblockable.

The bad? Longsnapping is still a major problem. Varney is the the holder so him being out didn't help..but it appears once again the snap and hold will be an adventure. The secondary played as expected after graduating two starters and seeing other guys have a reduced role for the sake of remaining fresh. Good...but not anywhere near Championship caliber.
