South Laurel 3, North Laurel 2

Featured Replies

In a matchup of a pair of likely contenders for the 13th Region crown, Josh Riley overcame control problems in the first and fourth innings to beat the Cardinals' crosstown rival in a four-hit, six-strikeout effort. Trey Smith got the save.

For North, Ryan Sams also pitched a solid game, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth when South strung together a HBP, a BB, and a pair of lucky infield singles to score the tying and winning runs.

"That's baseball," both coaches said after the game.

Smith and Jantzen O'Neal each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for SL, and Ryan Howell went 2-for-4 with a run scored. He was on third in the top of the seventh, but Smith was able to prevent the run.

Both of these teams do have a good chance of advancing deep into the region as do Whitley, Corbin, Middlesboro, Cumberland, and Bell in my opinion.

However, one team out of Whitley, Corbin, and South Laurel won't even make it to region. That will be a heck of a district tournament to watch. The same thing goes for Middlesboro, Bell, and Cumberland.

Don't forget Williamsburg in that district. They aren't a pushover. Is that district drawn or seeded?

I'm not sure but I think that it is seeded. Can anyone else shed some light??

Seeded. So far, SL and Corbin are tied for the top slot, based on the split of their doubleheader. SL has a DH left with Whitley; Corbin has one with W'Burg.
