Russell on right track

FLATWOODS Estill County strode into Henry R. Evans Stadium boasting an average of 41 points a game and their elusive quarterback accounting for 36 touchdowns.

Russell would have none of that.

The Red Devils derailed the Engineers’ plans by keeping them out of the end zone and scoring two defensive touchdowns on their way to a decisive 32-9 victory in the Class 3A playoffs on Friday night at Russell.

Senior Bronson Korzep stepped in front of a Trevor Jones pass and took it back 72 yards for the game's first touchdown to give Russell an early 6-3 lead.

It was Jones' first interception of the season and it provided a much-needed boost for the Red Devils.

"I dropped back and I saw that he was eyeing this guy," Korzep said. "He just happened to throw it right to him. I made a move on one guy, got a key block from Landon Arnold, and I just took off and ran."

It came at a pivotal time for Russell. The Red Devils went three-and-out on their first two possessions that were sandwiched around a 15-play drive from the Engineers that resulted in a Levi Tipton 20-yard field goal.
