Golden Statue: Central doesn't budge atop district

PAINTSVILLE Jim Matney readily admits Johnson Central football carries “a chip on our shoulders” against Ashland.

It showed Friday.

The host Golden Eagles took down the Tomcats, 42-7, to lock up the district championship for the sixth time in the past seven seasons.

Dual-threat quarterback Bryce Workman ran and threw for one score apiece, Patrick Rice and Gunner Slone punched in rushing TDs, Noah Frisby caught a scoring toss and Tyler Pack booted four field goals for Johnson Central (9-0, 4-0 Class 4A, District 8).

The Golden Eagles have won 19 consecutive regular season games and 12 straight against district opponents.

The Tomcats (5-4, 3-1 district) saw their four-game winning streak end in their regular season finale.

Rice, a senior, is one of a host of new faces in Johnson Central’s lineup. He started defensively last season, though he missed the Ashland game due to illness, and he didn’t see significant time in the backfield until this year.
