Greenup's Wright caps long night vs. Lewis

Did it matter to Greenup County’s football team that it took some 4½ hours to play Friday’s game at Lewis County?

 

Hardly.

 

Sophomore Jake Wright’s 24-yard run with 5:36 to go allowed the Musketeers to squeak past the Lions, 15-12, in a game that had three weather-related delays.

 

“Great football game, great atmosphere,“ said Greenup County coach Chris Mullins. “You hate that there had to be a loser … I think both teams just killed themselves out there.“

 

Wright, who ran four times for just 36 yards, nevertheless cruised practically untouched around right end. Junior Ryan Byrd ran 16 times for 157 yards, but Mullins said giving Wright the ball was an easy decision.

 

“He was fresh, and I wanted to give Byrd a break, and we thought with his speed he could break it, and we were right,“ Mullins said.

Great game. Hope LC heals up. Quite a few injuries Friday night. Good luck to Coach Hughes and the Lions the rest of the way. They should have a very good year if healthy.
