Inside Bluegrass Football - Week 8

Featured Replies

As things get wild in the states largest metro, they are less so in the second largest metro. In fact things are settling in as the season winds down with the Scott County Cardinals well atop of the Bluegrass area pecking order.

In 6A Scott County has set the bar for 2013. Undefeated and chewing up the local 6A teams - Bryan Station being the latest victim of the high flying Cardinals. Henry Clay is second best in the area. But they were pecked hard by Scott County in the first game. They will have to improve should they meet Scott County in the Regional final. Dunbar, under first year coach Paul Rains has done a 180. Still some work - but the 'dogs are back. Tates Creek started off strong but has run into choppy waters lately. Its hard to tell if the Creek is rising or falling at times this season. When everything clicks Tates Creek can be as dangerous as any Bluegrass area team (well almost any).

Bryan Station may have the most raw talent of the Bluegrass area 6As but it is still work in progress. But it should be noted that Bryan Station has taken to playing a strong schedule. Scott County, Highlands, Lexington Catholic were on the Defenders dance card this year. Had it not been for a stormy Saturday Bowling Green would have also been in the mix. In the long run this has to help the program. But an upset loss to the up and coming Bulldogs, at home, has pushed an extra loss in the loss column.

Lafayette has struggled after early in the season injuries but has posted a couple of wins in its last two outings. Madison Central came into 2013 with a lot of spots to fill from a large senior class that graduated. It has has also been hit with a lot of injuries. The Indians will be back but not in 2013.

LexCath maybe the second best team in the region - but without a head to head game against Henry Clay its hard to tell. After being the first victim on Bowling Green's hit parade to open the season the Knights played favorite St. X well for 3 quarters the second week. Some wins against other 6A teams gave the 4A Knights some confidence after the opening 1-2 punch. But the loss to Boyle County was a deep disappointment. The Knights are now on the equivalent of Survivor's Redemption Island and looking towards the playoffs.

LCA is struggling in 2A this year - badly.

So here is the order of the local teams - same as a last time. As noted last time Tates Creek is the hard team to fit. A one point win over Dunbar, but a recent loss to Bryan Station make them hard to fit. If you threw Dunbar, Bryan Station and TC into a playoff bracket picking the winner would be hard.

  1. Scott County (8-0)
  2. Henry Clay (7-1)
  3. Lexington Catholic (5-3)
  4. Dunbar (5-3)
  5. Bryan Station (3-4)
  6. Tates Creek (4-4)
  7. Lafayette (3-6)
  8. Madison Central (1-8)
  9. LCA (1-7)

Oops, sorry about that. Was getting caught up after being completely offline for over a week. I missed that TC has not had their break week.

Have the Commodores had injuries or something that explain some of the inconsistency or is it a young team? I know the QB is good and had a a really good year in 2012. Is he doing well this season?

Tates Creek is a solid team across the board. They have battled injury since the early portion of the season that has hurt them when they played tougher competition. But all teams have those same issues so Creek doesnt make excuses. Creek played tough games in losses to Henry Clay (1 score loss) and to Station (dominated the 2nd hald but lost by 10) and lost against a very inspired Clark County SR Night Team (by 1 score), in a game where Creek played without one of its best players in #8 Tavon Dunn 6'2 SR.WR. Creek really only laid 1 egg and that was at Dixie Heights were the wheels came off for a game. But really, Creek has been in every game that it has played.

Creek isnt young per se, but they have a very good young corps that is coming up. Creek is actually a veteran group (23 SR's) that is battling more than the season. This class is the class that is turning around a program that has been on the short side of things for some time. This class has won 3, and 4 games respectively in their Soph. and JR years. Now it has already matched its best win total in some time at 5, and has a great shot on SR Night to win #6 and win the district and receive the #1 Seed and host the playoffs.

You want to look at some of its top performers this year. Here is how they break down and have performed to date.

OFFENSE

GRAHAM GORDONQB has pased for 1825 yards and 24 TDs. (Good for 3rd in 6A yards, 2nd in passing TDs)

RJ TAYLOR43 Catches 602 Yards and 10 TDs (2nd 6A in Catches, 4th in yards, and 2nd in TDs)

TAVON DUNN 29 catches 416 Yards and 6 TDs.

CASEY GRIMES 82 Carries 518 Yards and 6 TDs.

DEFENSE

EAMON NASR Tackling MAchine 79 tackles 6 for loss.

RYAN BETLACH 55 TACKLES

MAX SWEET 45 TACKLES

Anchored on the O/D Lines by big Deion Webb and Jovan Blackburn. And plenty of other players that make plays on both sides of the ball and in the Special Teams. Tates Creek is a very solid team that is figuring out how to win. Making that jump is the toughest but they are laying a solid foundation for the younger groups coming that will have actually seen some success and will help lead the program back to its brighter days. ANy team not named Scott County in this area will have their hands full with Creek.

Thanks for posting those. I try to pull the area stats from KHSAA but there is not a year-to-date link at the KHSAA TC page like most teams.

Gordon and Taylor's numbers are strong. I hope they are getting some looks from colleges. Same with Nasr.

Taylor has offers currently, and most of the names mentioned above are being looked at at some level for college. This is a special group of seniors and a very close knit group. Tomorrow will be a special night.
