LEXINGTON — George Rogers Clark High School senior golfer Blake Cartwright is going to the state tournament. His teammates will be joining him.

The Cardinals earned a ticket to Bowling Green after winning the 9th Region Tournament for the first time since 2001 Monday at Kearney Hill Golf Links. Clark took team honors with a 306, edging defending champion Madison Central, Henry Clay and Scott County by three strokes. Scott County defeated Central and Henry Clay in a playoff for runner-up honors and a spot in the state event set for Oct. 8-9 at the Bowling Green Country Club.

 

Scott County’s Billy Tom Sargent claimed medalist honors with a 69. Jacob Cook (Franklin County) and Madison Central’s Zach Miller each had a 70. Harrison Clarke of Dunbar defeated Sayre’s Chris Saad, Will Sallee (Lafayette) and Blake Young of Lexington Christian for the third state qualifying slot. All four golfers finished the 18-hole round with a 73. Cook, Miller and Clarke will compete in the state tournament as individuals.
