Boyle County 34 George Rogers Clark 17

This was a game of two halves. GRC won the first half with a score of 10-0. Boyle Co came out on fire in the 3rd and scored 34 points. 21 of those points were off of GRC/special teams mistakes. Boyle has recovered two fumbles, and blocked a punt, leading to 34-point outburst to open the second half.

In the 3rd Q, GRC on one drive, had 6 first downs, but Boyle Co held them at the 1 yard line to take over on downs. Great defense by Boyle Co.

All in all a great game. Congrats to Boyle Co on the win.

Boyle County saved its best for last.

The unbeaten Rebels, ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 4A rankings, scored 34 unanswered points in the third quarter and went on to defeat George Rogers Clark 34-17 Friday night at Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals celebrated homecoming and paid respect for the guests with a moment of silence for victims of a deadly shooting that killed three in Danville Friday morning.

Clark led 10-0 at the half, but the Rebels fired back in the third quarter, scoring five touchdowns in nine minutes. During the decisive quarter, Boyle (5-0) took advantage of three turnovers, all special teams miscues by the Cardinals. Clark fumbled away two kickoff returns and had a blocked punt, resulting in three touchdowns by the Rebels.

“It was tale of two halves, that’s what it was,” Boyle County coach Larry French said. “We came out flat and they took it to us. We were fortunate that we weren’t down more than 10-0 at halftime.

“We got away with a win.”

Boyle running back Seph Burke led the Rebels’ comeback with 138 yards rushing on nine carries and one touchdown in the second half. Burke finished with 161 yards on 14 totes. Teammate Aiden Stewart-Hoskins added 69 yards rushing and three touchdowns during the final two quarters. He finished with 78 yards rushing.

“We got some quick scores and took control of the game a little bit,” French said.

Clark, which had given up at least 50 points in its past three games, held the Rebels scoreless and limited Boyle to just three first downs in the first two quarters. The Cardinals forced two fumbles, leading to one of two scores in the first half.

“They did a good job and kept our offense off the field,” French said. “We couldn’t get anything going offensively in the first half.”

Boyle’s first miscue, recovered by Clark’s Johnny Jarrett at Boyle’s 40-yard line resulted in a 4-yard touchdown run by Josiah Israel with 5:18 remaining in the first half. Sharrock set up the successful scoring drive with a 26-yard completion to Brent Stoneking on the previous play, leading to the short run by Israel.

The Cards came through again on their next drive, thanks to a roughing the kicker call and a roughing the passer call that led to a 24-yard field goal by Danny Dailey with 22 seconds remaining in the opening half.”

Sharrock completed 7-of-12 passes for 75 yards and rushed for 38 more yards during the first two quarters. Stoneking hauled in all seven passes from Sharrock for 75 yards in the opening half. Sharrock threw for 105 yards and completed three passes — all to Blanton — for 30 yards during the last two quarters.

“It’s something that we can build on,” Collins said. “We’ve got to make sure we move forward from this and not step backward.”

French, whose team edged Anderson County 30-27 in its previous contest, was pleased with the Rebels’ comeback in the second half, but wasn’t happy with his team’s performance in the opening half.

“You have to give our kids credit for coming back,” he said. “Give our kids credit for coming out flat, too.”
