The Week in Review:

Raceland 55 Greenup County 18

Yep, after their first win since 2010, Greenup County came into this game fired up and confident. But, the size and experience of the Rams was just too much for the Musketeers. Raceland’s offensive/defensive line gave a dominate performance. Greenup County scored several times early on big plays then Raceland’s experience took over while the Rams racked up 480 yards of offense.

South Point 23 Boyd County 19

The Pointers scored late in the fourth quarter to come from behind and spoil Boyd County’s plan for the first win of the season. The Lion’s pass defense proved to be a short coming allowing several big plays that allowed South Point to mover ahead. Coach Gillium will have to wait, at least, another week for his first win as Boyd County Coach.

Ashland 7 Russell 6

After telling people this score several times, yours truly has heard “what” in response from everyone. Wow, no one that follows football in this area would have picked the score for this game. Ashland has been playing better then expected and it is well documented that Russell is going to struggle some this year, but when the two get together, things can change. That’s why they call it a rivalry. Russell’s only scores came on a pair of field goals and Ashland could only manage one touchdown.

West Carter 30 Morgan County 25

I told you winning is contagious, in my article last week. Well, consider West Carter infected, with the winning bug that is. After being on a 14 game losing streak spanning three seasons, the Comets have now put together two consecutive wins after last weeks win, a 55-0 spanking of Nicholas County and now a less convincing win over Morgan County. But, I bet the Comets don’t care what the margin of victory was, a win, is a win.

Fairview 62 Bellevue 50

It came down to Fairview hitting some free throws after Bellevue got in foul trouble, oh wait, no that was a different game. I don’t know what happened, but I bet what ever did happen it was on the offensive side of the ball. Not the score many would have expected going in to this game. Obviously, defense is skeptical for both teams.

Lewis County 36 Nicholas County 0

The Lions have been bitten by the Win Bug as well, they are playing with confidence. I won’t gloat and tell you who said that would happen in the pre-season, the hell I won’t, I was singing their praises all pre-season. Lewis County is going to have a good year. Not that I’m rubbing it in, but I did pick them to finish second in the district behind Mason County. Stay tuned, we’ll see if I was right.

East Carter vs. Bath County (Postponed until 9/15)

Well, we’ve seen the playing field at schools flooded, without rain, not naming names. And, we’ve seen the lights in stadiums go out mysteriously when the home team is losing, no names please. But, this one is a new one, apparently East Carter’s Concession stand caught fire prior to this game starting. It was postponed and will played tomorrow at Kentucky Christian University.

Lawrence County 48 Breathitt County 26

The Dawgs continue to put up big numbers. The offense is obviously there and a team is going to have to play well to stop Lawrence County from scoring. The Dawgs are going to win some more games, and if you don’t watch out, they may beat some teams that they shouldn’t.

Coming Up This Week:

Raceland (3-1) at Coal Grove (OH)

Coal Grove is big and strong. Raceland’s attributes are it’s size, strength and speed. Should be a good game, but I see Raceland pulling away with the speed advantage.

Ashland (2-2) vs. Ironton (OH)

Ashland is playing good, but so is Ironton. Should be a “Good ‘ol, good one”. Expect a defensive batter in this one with the game likely being still in doubt in the fourth quarter. I think Ashland squeaks out the win late.

Russell (1-2) vs. Boyd County (0-4)

Russell will be hungry after a one point loss to Ashland last week. Boyd County doesn’t have the speed or size to stop the clock management offense of the Red Devils. Russell wins by a couple scores.

Fairview (3-0) vs. Hazard

It’s been proven that Fairview can score, and a lot, this game will come down to how well the Eagles can play defense. If they get the defense figured out, the Eagles win. Expect the Fairview defense to be ready.

Greenup County (1-3) vs. West Carter (2-1)

The Comets are on a winning streak, they are confident and thinking they can win. Greenup County was close in their first three games prior to getting man handled last week, the Musketeers are close to winning, but still have some bugs to work out. Confidence is a powerful thing, I see West Carter getting the win late, in a close game.

East Carter (0-2) at Lawrence County (3-1)

The Dawgs are scoring a lot and the Raiders are having some trouble. Lawrence County will continue to light the scoreboard up and will get their fourth win. The Raiders will have to wait for their first win of the season.

Lewis County (3-0) at Powell County

The battle of two unbeaten teams, someone is going to get their first loss of the year. I expect the Lions to suffer a minor set back this week. But, don’t worry Lewis County fans, the Lions will be better for it come District play.
