Cards reach region semifinals

The George Rogers Clark baseball team is two games away from making a return trip to the state tournament.The Cardinals (20-13) advanced to the 10th Region semifinals with a 10-0 shutout of Nicholas County in five innings Monday at Montgomery County High¿School.

 

In their tournament opener, the Cardinals belted 10 hits against the Blue Jackets, collecting four of those in a breakthrough outing in the third inning. Clark, which led 2-0 after the first two innings, crossed the plate four times in the third inning and added three more in the decisive fifth inning.

Wes Lawwill and Taylor Howard led the Cards’ offensive attack with three hits each. Howard had a single in the third frame that scored a pair of runs. Howard drove in three runs, while Lawwill connected on a double and finished with two RBIs.

Logan McQuerry connected on a run-scoring triple, while Brent Stoneking, Hunter Osborne and Scotty Turner each had a hit for the defending regional champions.

Clark ace Derek McKenzie threw the first three innings and scattered just two hits. McKenzie issued a walk and finished with one strikeout. McQuerry relieved McKenzie in the fourth and tossed the final two innings.

McQuerry whiffed a pair of batters, walked two and didn’t allow a hit.
