The George Rogers Clark boys track and field team will send 10 members to the state track and field meet after placing third in the Class AAA Region 7 meet Thursday at Caudill Middle School in Richmond. ( Pokey Harris in photo)

“I’m very pleased (with our performance),” Clark coach Dodd Dixon said. “Last year we advanced 10 boys to the state meet and this year, we’ve advanced 10 boys to the state meet. The only difference is that we’ll be competing in more events at state than last year. It’s the same number going. We have the experience and we’re also going to be more competitive at state this year with the senior team, as opposed to a junior-dominated team.

“I’m very pleased about how everybody performed and excited about going to state.”

The boys 4x200 relay team set a new school record and earned a spot in the state event.

Members of the relay team are Clay Dixon, Mark Davis, Pokey Harris, Andrew Walker, Andrew Ping, Lawrence Williams, Darian Farris and John Dixon.

“We’ve come a long way,” Ping said. “I have enjoyed every step of the way and I love my team.”

Harris, also a member of the baseball team at Clark, qualified in the 100- and 200-meter events, while Davis will compete in the state event. Alex White (3200 meters) and Jonathan Hubbard (high jump) also will compete in the state event that will be at the University of Louisville May 17-19.

Hubbard is elated to be part of the field in the high jump event.

“I’m very proud of my win, because I have worked so hard my entire career,” he said. “I have always come up short, so this is a nice way to end my career.”

Congrats to the GRC Track team! I know Coach Dixon has done wonderful work with the teams (including X-county). Wishing the 10 Track Cards the best of luck at the State meets!

Yes he has. Think we have a good chance to make some noise at state, with White, Dixon and Pokey. Pokey is such a athlete. Scolly in football, great baseball player and now also track. Would have loved to have seen him play basketball too.
