Mason's Black, Augusta's Hinson head up all-area team

Article from the Ledger Independent:

Mason County was a different team after getting senior Tyler Black in the lineup midseason. And first-year Augusta coach Jason Hinson made an immediate impact on the Panthers' program.

Local boys' basketball coaches responded accordingly by recognizing Black and Hinson as the player and coach of the year, respectively, on the 2012 Ledger Independent all-area team after both the Royals and the Panthers rebounded from early-season struggles to provide some exciting tournament moments.

Augusta's Brent Bach, Fleming County's Darion Burns and Lewis County's Brett Ruckel joined Black on the all-area first-team. St. Patrick's Ryan Gallenstein and Cory Jodrey, Deming's Johnathan Pilosky and Calvin Schalch, and the Royals' Shawn Johnson were also first-team honorees.

Bracken County's Josh Cummins and Dwayne Hamilton and Augusta's Corey Moore, Dalton Appelman and Tanner Kelsch were all honorable-mention selections. Mason's Steven Chambers, St. Patrick's Taylor Slack and Fleming's Troy Steward joined them.

Kentucky boys all-area first team

Tyler Black, Mason County -- The 6-foot-3 senior missed the Royals' first 17 games after an ankle injury sustained during football season, but quickly made up for lost time, giving Mason the number-one scoring option it desperately needed. He averaged 19.5 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game, hitting 52.9 percent from the field, and was voted by 10th Region coaches to the all-region team.

Brent Bach, Augusta -- This 6-1 sophomore guard was also named all-region. He scored 22.0 ppg, sinking 47 percent of his shots, and had 5 rpg.

Darion Burns, Fleming County -- The 5-9 sophomore point guard scored 18 ppg, making 59 percent on field goals, and collected 3.8 rpg. He was named all-Eastern Kentucky Conference.

Brett Ruckel, Lewis County -- The 5-11 sophomore sharpshooter, another all-EKC pick, scored 19 ppg with 3.3 rpg, sinking 72 percent from the line.

Ryan Gallenstein, St. Patrick -- This 6-3 senior was voted all-region after contributing 17.1 ppg and 8.8 rpg for the Saints, connecting on 53.8 percent from the field.

Cory Jodrey, St. Patrick -- The all-region honorable mention pick scored 16.6 ppg, nailing 58 3-pointers, and collected 3.9 rpg. He's a 5-11 junior guard.

Johnathan Pilosky, Deming -- The 6-3 senior guard/forward scored 15.3 ppg, making 53 percent of his shots, and had 6 rpg. He was also an all-region honorable mention selection.

Calvin Schalch, Deming -- Like his senior Black Devils running mate, the 6-1 guard was all-region honorable mention with 17.6 ppg, making 46 percent from the field, and had 5 rpg and 2 steals per game.

Shawn Johnson, Mason County -- This 6-6 sophomore was all-region honorable mention after notching 9.4 ppg and 7.5 rpg, nailing 55.2 percent of his shots.

Coach -- Jason Hinson, Augusta -- Hinson took his new team to a 19-13 record, its best since going 22-6 in 2001-2002 under Robin Kelsch, and came within a hair of beating the Royals for what would have been Augusta's first district tournament title since 1982. His teams are 76-67 in five seasons, including four at St. Patrick.

Honorable mention

Taylor Slack, St. Patrick -- The 5-11 senior guard was honorable mention all-region after amassing 14.1 ppg and 3.6 rpg, making 49.2 percent on field goals and 43.8 percent of his treys.

Troy Steward, Fleming County -- A 6-3 sophomore, Steward was the Panthers' representative on the 16th Region all-tournament team and all-EKC after posting 14 ppg and 3.8 rpg, making 54 percent from the field, 40.8 percent from the perimeter and 75.3 percent at the line.

Josh Cummins, Bracken County -- The 5-11 senior guard was all-region honorable mention, leading the Polar Bears with 10.5 ppg, connecting on 72 3s. He also had 4 rpg.

Corey Moore, Augusta -- One of the Panthers' nine seniors, the 6-3 Moore had 11 ppg and 5 rpg.

Steven Chambers, Mason County -- The 6-3 junior joined Black and Johnson to give the Royals a triple-headed post presence. He scored 7.9 ppg and hauled down 6.3 rpg, making 50.2 percent from the field.

Dalton Appelman, Augusta -- The 6-1 senior averaged 10.0 rpg and collected 3 rpg.

Dwayne Hamilton, Bracken County -- This 6-5 senior center totaled 8 ppg and 6 rpg.

Tanner Kelsch, Augusta -- The 6-1 junior forward and glue man pitched in 8 ppg and 8 rpg.

I remeber Schalch blocked a dunk attempt by Paris' Jennings, he can sky, most the season when he doesn't do well was due to an injury to his left upper thigh he suffered at St.Pat. but he played thru it. had some good games his Jr. anf Sr. year.

Piosky when he gets hot there's not a better player, couiple seasons back Pilosky and Schalch on the jv team at Augusta came off the bench and lifted the team to a win, they scored 15 and 16 points in that game on jv. New they were gonna be something.
