  1. Alright, let's be honest now:

Who on here ACTUALLY thought that the Lions could go 3-0 this week?

Be honest (this includes fans as well)

Well, I thought Fleming might sneak up and surprise them:scared:

but I knew Ballard and Mason County had no shot because they were convinced they could run with them and wear them out.

    Not a good strategy

  2. Its statements like this that make a lot of people not like Elliott Co.

Don't get too cocky. Ballard is coming to town. Thats a different animal than Mason Co. I am not saying they are that much better than Mason, but they are different. They will want to run with Elliott Co. It should be an excellent game.

Ballard is better than Mason and will come after Elliott in waves, but where Ballard can wear most teams down, they can't wear Elliott down, they will need to get Elliott in foul trouble to have a shot at winning, otherwise, they will not

"outrun" Elliott, that strategy will fail, but that is the only strategy Ballard has

which will probally be their downfall.

  3. 1. Neither team is going to change their style for the other team. Ballard and Elliot will both bring their running game.

    2. The only one on Elliots team that "may" get tired it T. Knipp but he picks his spots to take a break anyhow. The other 4 could play 2 games back to back and not miss a beat.

    3. If anyone gets tired, it will be Ballard from the bus ride

    4. Have to admire Ballard for getting on the bus to drive to Sandy Hook as several other teams were given the same opportunity and "passed".

    5. Both teams will benefit from the experience and will only make them tougher in post season.

    6. I will take Elliot County in a high scoring game. I don't think Ballard can shoot with them.

    7. 16th region officials do not let it get as physical as it gets in Lexington and Louisville, there will be a lot of "touchy" fouls in this one that the B boys will have to adjust too. This will benefit Ballard as Elliot could get in foul trouble which would be to Ballards advantage. If Elliot gets anyone more than T. Knipp in foul trouble Ballard will probally take the game.

    8. Overall, will be one of the better games in the state for the year with a state tournament atmoshere.

    9. Mason County will not hang with Elliot this year. Ballard has a much better shot than Mason.

  4. So it most likely isn't Biggs and ZB23 said that the AD was supportive. So who is laying the law down on Blazer Blvd.?

Biggs to my understanding is very supportive of any kids wanting to play AAU.

But the hierarchy had already squawshed it before Biggs got here. You can play it if you want too, but do so at your own risk is the general perception.

But the point is pretty moot now, Ashland in the past used to have players that could have competed at the statewide level. Unfortunately, That is no longer the case.

  5. Well there goes that theory.

Well, there is aau and there is aau. Playing in a couple of local tournaments does not compare to what the competition the Elliot County boys played.

I forgot about Matt Thomas, he did play a good level of competition, but I was told that there is a certain element of Ashland people that don't want you to play with kids from any other area. Ashland kids only or don't play. They end up getting beat pretty bad and lose interest pretty quickly.

  6. I think one of the key factors in the decline of AHS basketball is that it doesn't appear that anyone in a leadership position has embraced the concept of AAU basketball. Like it or not, the elite players, or those who become elite, follow the AAU path from a early age. I am not saying I agree or disagree with the AAU concept, but like it or not, it is here to stay. The elite players embrace basketball 12 months a year. I think AHS wants to be a good all around sports program, which they are, and not focus solely on basketball, which is probably the proper perspective to have. However, it's difficult to excel sometimes when athletes get spread too thin. It is my opinion, unless someone in the Ashland system fully embraces AAU, it will be difficult for AHS to become an elite program again.

The perfect example is Elliott County, which doesn't play football(or soccer I believe), the Faulkners have literally played hundreds of basketball games over the past 10 years or so and have developed(along with a lot of heart)a skill set that is difficult to compete with. Also, Jon VanHoose at Russell. These are division I type players who full dedicate themselves to basketball only.

Good point Ace, I can remember players playing in an aau league at Alumni

several years ago that helped players developed, but it seems that the "leaders" decided that if they let Ashland kids play AAU that they would get

"recruited". Seems like Ashland kids are "discouraged" from playing basketball with anyone else. Seems like Beach and Surgalski are the last bunch of Ashland kids that played any AAU and I'm not sure if that is the correllation between reduced results or not.

But it is an interesting and maybe valid concept. Couldn't tell you who is to blame, just seems like it "happened".

I think that is a big reason why the Elliot County boys don't get intimidated by anyone in the state though, because they have already played the best in the country!:thumb:

  7. Allen Russell was the ref who waved it off, not sure what he was looking at

but that call was not that hard to make. Congrats to the Rose Hill boys, Ashland is staring into a bleak future. And their roster seems to be shrinking?

Good chance Ashland doesn't make it to the regional this year.

Although I do think they will win the rematch with Russell

  8. Didn't Holmes also win the Defenders of the Station tournament the week end before where they knocked off TWO top 10 teams in 3 nights while also beating Tates Creek by around 30??

I don't see how anyone can question Holmes schedule when they've played four games alone in December against top 10 competition while also knocking off two #1 ranked teams. (Scott Co and Bryan Station)

Again, I don't see what Holmes has to do with EC's schedule??:sleep:

I think it would be a safe bet that outside of Scott County, the other teams that Holmes has beaten in December would not have won a single game at the Beach Ball. They really need to get out and play some nationally ranked teams to see what they are made of or it will come back and bite them in the butte in March:laugh:
