  1. I think David McFarland will be an excellent coach at Ryle. I think he will get the most effort out of the guys in the program on the defensive end and will play fast offensively. It is great that Ryle took a chance on a JV coach that is well respected in the region. He has the basketball background with his father being a coach, playing in high school and at NKU and having coached JV and AAU for several years. I assume he will bring his brother along as assistant in some capacity.

    Best of luck.

  2.

Thanks for sharing. That moment was very special. These are the great memories that this tournament produces for the freshman in the area.

The boys are back on the hardwood tonight starting at 6:00 with NCC/Ryle in the first matchup.

  3. I thought the student section battle was outstanding last night. The numbers for CCH were smaller than usual, but they went sweater vests in honor of Coach L. The Holmes section was only made up of 20 or so students, but they battled back. There was a mutual respect by both sections and they looked like they were having fun. The hand slaps at the end were a great way to end their very respectful, fun-filled interaction.

  4. Coach Miller is a Beechwood grad. He has been an assistant coach around the area. He was a member of the Pendleton County staff during their Sweet Sixteen run and he's been back a Beechwood a few years as a varsity assistant. He'll make it an easy transistion from Coach Shumate, but will put his own stamp on the program. Congrats to Coach Miller and best of luck with the transistion to DII basketball.

  5. Mike Code and Mike Flynn come to mind as coaches who are teachers, but not in the building where they coach. Both have had some success. Certainly, it'd be nice to have a coach in the building to ensure discipline and academic problems are dealt with swiftly and correctly, but the best candidate may be a non-teacher in this case. I agree with SportsGuy's assessment of Miller as a dedicated Beechwood alum and a good coach of the fundamentals of basketball. I'm sure Mr. Zimmerman will make a good decision in the end.

  6. AURORA – Rick Shumate, boys varsity basketball coach at Beechwood (Ky.) High School for the past four years, was hired for the same position at South Dearborn Monday night.

Shumate, 42, replaces Toby Carrigan, who left SD to take the head coaching position at NCAA Division III College of Mount St. Joseph, in Cincinnati, in May.
