  1. Just a thought..

Not that I want him to go ANYWHERE, but I've always wondered why Chris Larkey, the son of Rockcastle County head coach Tom Larkey, isn't up for consideration for some of the jobs in the region.

If I'm not mistakened, he has been on staff while for nearly 20 years (and has been the offensive coordinator for most of them) with his father and has experienced a great deal of success with considerably less talent than teams not as successful.

  2. There sure is alot of teams that run it 45 times a game and win. Rock, Bell, Belfry, Matney coached teams, Mercer, Russell, Lynn Ray coached teams, Danville. Just to name a few.

What is being suggested is solely related to the Rock. There is a correlation for Rockcastle County between the years that they have a balanced attack and years that they experience success.

  3. What does Rockcastle County need to do to improve in 2007? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

Rockcastle County needs to offer a more balanced attack. In the state runner-up years of '01 and '02, Larkey complemented Reagan with a a formidable passing game that accumulated nearly 5,000 yards in the two years. They kept defenses on their heels and allowed Reagan and a talented offensive line to get 5-7 yards a pop.

Burkhart matured in his three years as a passer, and in his senior year of '05 they displayed a pretty good passing attack and the Rock played in the state semis. The sophomore Bishop seems to be a pretty talented young quarterback. If Larkey can get him to buy into the system that made the Rock successful in '01, '02, and '05, the Rock shows a lot of promise because the running game will be there.

  4. I stand corrected on the length of the field goal attempt (I wasn't there, wasn't smoking at the time, but I was relying on my faulty memory), but there is no need for the personal attacks. Mason County had more than 400 total yards against Rockcastle in that game. The Golden Eagles handled Mason pretty handily last season and this year's Johnson Central team is much stronger than last years was, particularly its defense.

On a dry field, I am skeptical that Rockcastle will be able to stop the Golden Eagles on the road any better than they stopped Mason County at home in last season's regional final.

Almost any informed person on Rockcastle football will tell you that last year's team overachieved from the start. Miller went down early, the offensive and defensive line was younger and more inexperienced, and the skilled position players were still pretty green (except for the QB Burkhart, of course). At a school when a regional championship is expected every year, I feel like the expectations were temporarily lowered in '05. Larkey's coaching, along with the unexpected emergence of the Stallsworth kid got them into the final four.

This season is completely different. The Rocket faithful expect more from them than any team since '01 and '02. I look for this to be a close game, but I can assure you that looking at the Rockcastle County team from a year ago when making a prediction in this one will leave you far from accurate.

  5. I've watched both teams play this year. I may be blinded by "Rocket Passion", but I've felt a lot more uneasy about upcoming playoff opponents that the Rock actually took down. (i.e. Cov Cath in 2001, Highlands 2002, Bell County numerous times) I am well aware of their record and stats, I just don't think JC matches up well with Rockcastle County.

Rockcastle County's defensive strategy has always been to get so much penetration from the defensive line that they kill the speed before it ever starts. I see JC being very vulnerable to that. Also, I see Rock keeping the ball for the majority of the game. I don't expect Rockcastle County to break a lot of big plays because of the team speed of JC; but, by the same token, I don't expect JC to stop Miller from getting 4-6 yards every carry.

    My prediction...

    Rock 27

    JC 14

  6. And in reference to the Durham situation, I hope Louisville doesn't ever get another in-state recruit south of Lexington and east of I-75. Almost all of these boys bleed blue, and when one of them finally takes a chance in hopes of joining a premiere program in Louisville, Louisville treats them like dirt. I must say that I wasn't at all disappointed to see Petrino and the Cards go down last night. Hopefully, Durham will go to UK and have a stellar career in the SEC, something much more respectable than a stellar career in the Big East.

  7. Rockcastle County wins and will be the number 1 seed in the first round and host at least the first 2 rounds of the playoffs should they win next week.

Don't know much about the game except the field is a muddy mess....exactly how high school games should be...LOL.

Coach Larkey and staff should be commended for getting Anthony "Coach" Cook into the game on special teams and 1 defensive play as well. Coach Cook is a senior manager for the Rockets...this was his first game action as a Rocket!!!!

WAY TO GO COACH COOK!!!:dancingpa :dancingpa :dancingpa

Congrats to the Rockets on a 9-1 regular season!!!!:dancingpa :dancingpa :dancingpa

It's stories like the one regarding Coach Cook that make high school football so special. Coach Cook has been a manager since middle school. Along the way, he obtained more football knowledge than the vast majority of the players. It's dedicated people like him that contribute to truly prosperous programs in ways that the coaches, players, and boosters can't. Props to Coach Cook!! You make the program and community proud, young man!

  8. I agree. I would add that there are many opinions in NKY, and not all of them consider the likes of Rockcastle and company to be Podunk.

Traditionally, these NKY have been superior to the Rock and the 3A teams in Eastern Kentucky. However, as stated before, Rockcastle County is 1-1 against HHS and 1-0 against CCHS. These games have actually taken place pretty recently, the last being a 46-7 Rockcastle County thrashing in 2002 of Highlands in the state semis.

Even if the NKY teams are superior athletically, these games with the Northern Kentucky teams aren't too farm removed from the minds of those in the Rockcastle County program. This generation of Rockets

just aren't intimidated by the NKY teams and I don't think they will be until they have a personal experience that influences them otherwise.

  9. Madison Southern has more athletes and much more speed on the field than Rock. As far as the kicking game, MS is ahead in this category, but not by much. I feel like this could be one of their weaknesses. This chould be a close game. Rock must play hard and make every play count to win this one.

I hope you are right. Watching the Rock play a competetive Bell County team was certainly better for the fan's viewing pleasure, not to mention it made both teams better.

But, I'm afraid you may be blinded by Eagle passion.

  10. As much as people like to pick Rock big in this one, it is a border rival that has some bad blood between some of the residents in each county. Do not be surprised if Madison Southern comes out with a vegence to end their losing streak to Rock which now stands at 14. Rock is undefeated against the Eagles 14-0.

    1988: 36-18 Rock

    1989: 28-8 Rock

    1990: 54-0 Rock

    1991: 39-6 Rock

    1992: 35-8 Rock

    1993: 41-14 Rock

    1994: 28-6 Rock

1995: 28-27 Rock Overcame a 20 point deficit in the 4th quarter to win.

    1996: 19-17 Rock

    1997: 36-3 Rock

    1998: 35-14 Rock

    2003: 44-0 Rock

    2004: 36-0 Rock

    2005: 35-7 Rock

Total Points: Rock 494 Madison Southern 128

Average Score: Rock 35 Madison Southern 9

    Thanks for the stats 3Wishes.

But, let's be honest with ourselves and make the fair distinction between the distorted perception you attempt to relay and what the true reality of the situation is. I know you don't want the Rocket faithful to come across as arrogant and pretentious. But, the truth is that Rock is a far superior team to Madison Southern.

Rock by a minimum of 4 touchdowns (which may only be 24 points considering the lack of a kickin game they are experiencing.)

    Winning streak grows to 15.

  11. What impressed me more than anything in reference to Rock's running game was that Bell County consistently put 9 people in the box. Rockcastle County never posed a serious threat through the air and Bell County adjusted very early to try to off-set the running game. At times, there were six guys blocking nine. Still yet, Miller came away with 297 yards. Very impressive win for the Rock. I do expect, however, for Hilton to come with a drastically different offensive strategy the next time around.
