  1. Who comes out on top of this bitter rivalry?

The Murray team I saw Friday night had no passing game at all. They have a good back who is young but they don't have the line to help him out.

I will take Mayfield by 3 or more touchdowns

Unless Murray makes some kind of miracle turn-around, I can't imagine that this will be a contest. I guess if the Cards play horrible and give up a bunch of turnovers, Murray could keep it within 3 td's. Otherwise, I say Mayfield wins by 5 td's.
  2. Yes, their combined enrollment is under 400.

About 15 years ago, the state was encouraging Fulton City, Fulton County and Hickman County to explore the idea of consolidating their school systems. I believe the state was offering, with the use of technology, to make a new multi-county school a prototype for similar consolidations in the future. If memory serves, Hickman County's board nixed any discussions of the issue.

Wow, I can't imagine all three combining. Are there any consolidated schools right now that are made up of two separate counties? To me, it makes sense to consolidate the Fulton schools. I know some parents and teachers wouldn't like it, but financially it might be better.
  3. Combining Fulton City/County would amount to a better football program obviously but I dont think it would lead to a necessarly sound football program. It is a rural county where there has not (to my knowledge) a structured little league, if over time they did the right things sure they could become fairly formidable but even combined they would not be large and the rural nature and distance between Fulton and Hickman would make it harder to establish a good little league team in my opinion. Westsider may have a better take than I though, he is well traveled with sports in this part of the state
I am surprised that the Fulton schools haven't consolidated already. In my opinion, it only makes sense for them to do so. Both schools produce some very talented athletes and consolidating "could" make for some very good football and b-ball teams. I used quotations on "could" because that area has had issues with getting all of those athletes to play and fully commit to the programs. The overall support also is lacking in my opinion. The potential is high and when they do get a group of kids to stick with it, they can play with anyone. If they ever consolidate and get some stability in the football and b-ball programs, I think they will be very, very tough and extremely exciting to watch . Just my two cents.
  4. I saw where the other thread got locked for some reason. so, let's open it up here..What's everyone's thought on this game? IMO, it'll come down to Mayfields line being able to contain the bigger and deeper Graves line. The Eagles play smash mouth football and I feel they will be able to put up some points against the Cards, but, I think Mayfield's speed and ability to mix the pass and run, will also put some points up. Should be a very good game, especially being a crosstown rivalry and high intensity. I like Mayfield to win in a pretty close game...31 to 21....
Hearing the terms Graves Co. and "smash mouth football" in the same sentence cracks me up. Graves has improved and is heading in the right direction, but don't get all crazy just yet. This game should be good with the injury riddled 1A Cards winning a close one over the big 4A/6A Buzzards. Remember, this is like a state championship game for Graves so they will be pumped.
  5. Another factor to consider...

The usage of anabolic steroids, both the prescription injectables and dietary supplement "precursors", is a well-known inhibitor of the immune system.

I think a LOT of players are using the precursor supplements...

    :bunny:

I can't believe you mentioned steroids. To throw out steroid accusations without any proof or understanding of them is irresponsible. Although research has shown that steroids "CAN" have some deleterious effects on the immune system, it is in people who use high doses of steroids over many years. You should look for realistic and probable causes for such problems before ever mentioning steroids. There has been an increase in staph infections everywhere and in all age groups. Many of them are antibiotic-resistant as well. I believe it is a result of new strains of Staph that can cause infections even in those with normal immune function. Add the heat and dehydration on top of that and you have a perfect situation for new strains of Staph to thrive.
  6. Missed the stats but I know we had 3 TD passes and the frosh rb ran for a pair of scores and alot of yards, he is gonna be a special back before he leaves Mayfield. Our offensive line and kicking game were huge both really stepped it up. The only glich for the kicking game was a near miss on a 52 yard field goal attempt, this kicker is the real deal

Was that Murell; if so, he has some great pedigree. If I'm not mistaken, his uncle is William "Yance" Murell and his dad is Danny Kirby.

  7. Based on history I would guess that Beechwood would stay in 1A, durning their incredible run they could have played up just as Mayfield and Danville did but that was then and this is now. I know I use to think when Mayfield was in AA that if we were playing in 1A (where our enrollment would have placed us) that we had some teams that could have ended their run but after we joined 1A I gained more respect for how good Beechwood was espically after we ended their strangle hold on 1A in 95 by barely hainging on to a win that I thought would come easily before the game was played. That was then and this is now so I have no idea whether or not Beechwood would move up but if they do it would add another small school super power to a already packed AA. I think AA will be great with or without them but if they do it would make AA the most exciting class to watch every year for me. As for Mayfield, I dont think it makes good sense. Mayfield's enrollment is in decline and a good portion of the kids comming into the system are Mexicans that do not play football. As it stands now it is hard for Mayfield to mount championship threats every year rather we now only have truly championship calibre teams every 3rd of 4th year and I think that trend will only continue as the schools football base continues to shrink as almost every new housing development is now located outside of the schools boundaries.
Good post; I was about to post the same thing about Mayfield. The economic downfall in the past 4-5 years has really impacted the city school's enrollment. Very few young families are staying in Mayfield anymore and hardly any are moving into Mayfield. If it weren't for the influx of Mexicans, there is no telling what the city enrollment would be down to. Actually some would say that the influx of Mexicans has caused the city schools to diminish in numbers because many people send their kids to Graves or other schools because of them. So maybe that cancels each other out. Anyway, I don't see Mayfield's program getting stronger until the city itself has a turn around and more kids are attending Mayfield. I am not sure they can hold the dynasty if it keeps getting worse. Their best bet is to stay 1A (unless we can turn the Mexicans into "football" players instead of "futbol" players). As for Beechwood, they would have a much better chance in 2A.

  9. Good kid or not, he didnt deserve Mr. Basketball period.
I agree 100%. Have you noticed that the biggest arguement "for" Allen is that he is a great kid. There are a ton of great kids who were good high school players, but they didn't win any awards let alone the Mr. Basketball award. If he was our best, we are down; way, way, way down.
  10. For the record Proffitt wasnt the only player for SL to step up. Trey Smith also played a heck of a ball game.
Yes he did and let me apologize for ignoring him. I think you get my point though. JayRay is harping on one aspect of the game and doesn't seem to have the ability to recognize that Graves controlled this game. Calling Graves Co. "bad" is not only disrespectful to the Eagles team, but also to SL. What does that say about his own team if he says they got beat by a "bad" team with a "horrible" style of play. That is a slap in the face to the SL players and their coach, but what can you expect from an "upper-deck expert". He was mouthing before the game and he still is. The difference is that before the game he was predicting "the beating of all beatings". Now he is trying his hardest to find an excuse for why SL is done.
  11. All of your questions can be answered with one answer.....gameplan.Ummm....let me think who comes up with the game plan?Oh yeah the coaches!!!As far as being a sore loser,I'm not one of these die-hard highschool b-ball gurus that live and die by this I just think that Graves plays the worst style of ball to hit the basketball court.(Cowards ball)I just wish people on here would develope there own opinions and say what they feel.Once a couple of people pile on the same opinion everyone else is scared to voice there REAL opinion. It's just funny that after that game everyone was complaining about the same things I am on here but now everyone is all politicaly correct and afraid to get piled on by other team supporters.I personally don't care what anyone says about MY OPINION,Im going to voice it and I'll argue with all day if need be.If your right I'll be the first to admit it,if I feel I'm right I'm not going to tuck my tail and bow down to the politicaly correct like alot of people on here.Oh yeah I did'nt get to see the J-town-Graves game but what kind of defense did J-town play?
Yes, your coach should have switched up defenses, but WAKE-UP because guess what dude, being killed on the boards is NOT gameplan, having your big man severely shutdown is NOT gameplan, having nobody other than Proffit step-up offensively is NOT gameplan. These things are called "being outplayed and beaten!!" The reason I am getting on your case is because you say that Graves Co.'s style of play is horribe and you say that Graves Co. has a bad team. Well, that bad team and horrible play sent your almighty cardinals packing early. Everyone thought SL and PRP had it made, but I guess somebody forgot to tell their opponents to lie down and give it to them. How about you drop the excuses, the blaming and the lack of respect. I know it hurts to admit that you guys just got flat-out beat, but you had a good season none-the-less. By the way, of course you are entitled to your opinion, even if it is silly.
  12. Do you believe in unlikely?!?!?

Cinderella moves on to play in the championship. Apollo has never been before, they'll be meeting J-Town, who likewise have never been to the finals, or anywhere beyond the first round before this year for that matter.

Someone is going to bring home their first state title.

Dragonfire, thanks for the updates during the game!!
  13. South Laurel got burned by the back-door play because they overplay the passing lanes and gamble for the steals, which is the way they always play. They just ran across a team that was able to make the plays to take advantage of it. The credit should go to the coaches for finding that weakness is South's defense and to the Graves Co. players for carrying out that plan.
Yes, and I wish JayRaySL would realize this along with some other things, but he is not going to give anyone else credit.
  14. What Jayraysl is saying is that he should have been coaching South Laurel and they would have walked over Graves. Dadburnit, I KNEW that something was wrong! ;)
 JayRay, I don't want to be rude, but you may be the worst sore loser I have seen on here. I know you guys expected to walk right into the finals again, but you didn't. You got beat by a very good team. Just because you don't like their style of play doesn't mean they are bad. Yes, you did refer to Graves Co. as "a team this bad". Graves Co. may run a boring ball controlled offense, but they are far from bad. They are 29-5 and have beat alot of very good teams including yours, so get over it. You keep harping on your coach and the defense he called, but here are some other questions for you to ponder. Why did Walt get outplayed by Cavette? Why did you guys get abused on the boards? Why couldn't such a "superior" team like SL control the tempo once they got the ball? I'm sure all of your jabs at Graves Co. are coming out of shear frustration (just like your team's frustration on the court), but you need to give some credit where it is due. Your team was great but it is over now.
