  1. This will be a heck of a football game. I think Whitley comes in a little underated, but that may play into their hands. Playing at home will help but i do not know if that is enough. They must not give up the big play and fall behind early. This is a huge game for both teams. A win and the season looks bright but a loss and things in district look dim.

  2. first the fans were smarter than Coach Campbell, they said he should pass more. Now they are smarter than coach black, he should run more. It seems as though everyone has all the answers. I personally think BOTH coaches did/do a good job and the fans should cheer and not try to coach.

While your comments may not be meant to be critical, all they do is start to drive a small wedge in the system and create doubt. AND, I mean this in the most respectful way, most fans don't know near as much as they think they do. When they attend all practices, weight lifting sessions, film breakdown sessions, coaches meetings, deal with the players all day THEN MAYBE you might have close to enough info to start making suggestions. And that would ONLY be if you had enough knowledge to be on the staff (most fans think they do but don't)

Since none of you were hired for the job, I'd suggest that you leave the coaching to Black and staff, they are more than capable of determing the best course of action. You have to remember, Black isn't here to build a team, he's here to rekindle a championship caliber program. It might mean more bumps in the road in the short term, but in the long run - the program will be far better off.

Mountainmut, topgun and others - quit your griping and questions, jump on board, it will be a fun ride. It may not be as exciting this year, but it will down the road!

Man you have read WAY to much into my post!:walk:

  3. Are you saying Whitley would be 2-0 if they were running the ball down people's throat...

Thanks MM but I can speak for myself. What I meant by my statement is our players are built to play a physical running style game. Until we can force it down someone's throat when we need to, it will be a long year. You have to have both threats. (running/passing) It will come in time and I agree with MM that it would be good to see a powerset in the middle of a drive from time to time to keep the D off ballance. The passing attack is great we just need to throw in a little more power running in the mix. If you will remember against Bell we could drive but get stopped inside the 20. The reason we were driving was because of the passing attack mixed with the running attack. Then inside the 20 a few times we threw the ball 3 or 4 times= tornover! We need a little power game in there somewhere, and I believe you will start to see it as the season goes on. Good luck tonight.

  4. Whitley looked good but Bell made a few more bigger plays than Whitley. Whitley moved the ball well but good not finish in the redzone. A touchdown called back in the first quarter hurt them. Bell just played a solid game. A great game!! Whitley will most likley go 0 and 3 at the begining of the season with bell hordin and shelby but will make a bunch of noise in the district. I'ts hard to say after a lost but i think after watching them play and seeing the number of kids playing(82) Whitley is BACK!!!

  5. Very good post. What do u think about going to a 5A class system? I watched Ron Blume play against Whitley Co he's an excellent hs running back but definetly not a D1 player. QUOTE=ukbellco14]I don't think whether Blume makes an impact on the football field, where ever he goes, is that important. Nor do I think if he had ended up at UK, or some other Div1 school, and saw little to no PT really matters either.

I think any kid who is considering college football as an option to further their academic and athletic career needs to realize one thing. Football will eventually end, and it's most likely going to end after college.

Therefore, any kid who is considering college football as an option to further their academic and athletic career should do the following 2 things:

1.) Go to college where you can get the best education possible, as well as meet the most contacts possible; your education and contacts, not your football career, will get you a successful, stable career!

2.) Go to the college that is willing to pay for that education so when you get out of school you, or your family, isn't thousands of dollars in debt!

I don't care if a kid is Div1 or not.... these are the things that matter. Unless the kid is a top 100 HS recruit with actual pro potential, where he goes to play college football probably isn't going to matter in the long run, except for the two above mentioned realizations.

    Listen to these stats:

The chance of an NCAA Division 1A college football player getting drafted is .01 percent.

Add all other college football divisions (Div1AA, D2, D3, NAIA) and it gets tougher because their are more players competing for the same 255 draft slots (the number of picks in this years draft).

Now consider the fact that only about 1/2 of those players drafted will actually make the team and earn a spot on the final roster.

What about free agents? For the players who don't get drafted, but actually come on as free agents, it doesn't get much better. Just a little over 1% of free agents actually make a career out of the NFL.

The average career of an NFL player lasts only 3.5 years.

The median NFL salary is around $500,000.... which sounds like alot, but not when it only lasts 3.5 years and you blow most of it because you are living the life of MTV's "Cribs." 1.75 million dollars is a lot of money, but unless managed properly, isn't near enough to sustain someone for a lifetime, especially if they have a family and are living the "luxurious life."

I did not use average salary because those numbers are skewed due to the inflated salaries of superstars. The average NFL salary is actually 1.5 million, however, only 19% of NFL players actually make over 1 million dollars.

A career in the NFL provides very little security. If you don't perform... you are replaced. If you get hurt... you are replaced. If someone in the organization doesn't like you... you are replaced. There goes the money. And so on and so on and so forth.

Think the NFL life is glorious? Most NFL players retire from the NFL with little to no money, divorced, jobless, and their bodies are literally destroyed. Many are addicted to drugs, alchohol, or some other substance.

Unless you have a real shot at being an NFL franchise player (which is even more unlikely then just getting to the NFL), with the ability to market your name after life in the NFL (endorsement deals, sports anchors, etc), then you better have a plan outside of football.... and that plan better involve a free college degree and getting to know ppl "in the know."

    Now consider these stats:

In Colorado there were 3,481 male high school seniors who played football during the 1994 season. Of these, 31 received full scholarships at Division I-A schools (0.0089 percent). There are just over 10,000 full scholarships available for Div1A football. There are well over a million highschool football players. You do the math. As a high school football player you have little chance of receiving a full-ride football scholly.

Anyone who can earn a Division1A scholarship is to be especially commended! Anyone who can earn a college football scholarship, period, is to be commended!

Having said all that.....Congrats Mr. Blume, where ever he goes on to continue his collegiate athletic and academic career!

  6. If the rumors come to pass and the air is rife with rumor, the right thing to do is for Lonnie to call Coach Campbell into the office and make ammends. It would be difficult for both parties but, with such short notice it would be imposible to find a better coach than Mike Campbell. Mike could reassume the reigns quickly. This years team is really Campbells anyway. I hope that if these rumors come to pass, the administration does what is best in the interest of Whitley County Football.

This entire thing has been funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Will they run a 2 or 3 back set? I know that Teague ran well in the game that Rider was out last year and it seems as though there was another young back who had a good game or two. How will they fit into the new offense? Will McCumbers be a better option QB than Bowman if that is the offense they run?

Whitley seems to have a lot of skilled players coming back which should ease the transition period for the new staff.

Your right, Teague did run the ball well but look for him to spilt carries with Jones. Jefferies should be at fullback and McCumbers at QB. Whitley will be able to run the option with McCumbers but the kid has a pretty good arm. If I'm coaching I put Teague at tailback, Jefferies at fullback and play Jones in the role like a Reggie Bush. I would line Jones up in the backfield, wideout, kick returner, punt returner, as long as he touched it 15 times a game.

  8. Whoa Nelly! Just listen to these Corbin Redhound fans. It cracks me up.

Think back about when Whitley Countys best football players were leaving to play at Corbin. The most popular redhound comments was "Whitley coaches are running off the players."

Next thing ya know we got all the Redhound supporters are on here bashing Whitley for making a coaching change. Now what? You want Ysidro and Adams to come to Corbin?

Do we have some Corbin supporters that say Whitley was too hard on Campbell? Should have gave him more time? It was wrong what Whitley did to that poor coach.

    I love it!

    So true :thumb:

  9. The fact is Whitley plays 4a football, I'm sorry but that is a different type of football compared to 2a or even 3a. They can not change that and have to deal with it the best they can. Just as Corbin plays in a weak district they can not change that. Success is measured many different ways as said by a prior poster. Whitley will be successful in many ways. One, they will be more competive with solid teams such as Madison Central. Two, they should win more ball games. Three, they will make the playoffs. Four, they may win a playoff game. Five, they will be one of the better teams in the mountains. Good luck to Gentry and the change was needed!

  10. Looks like the Redstorm will be back on track, if Gentry can do one thing. Can he keep the players Fox sends him from the middle school playing football. I think he can and this will help Whiltey become a force once again in the mountains. He also will not lose kids to other nearby programs. (sorry to those who had their eye on some good talent coming up) Whitley is back and it's goning to be great... :thumb:

  11. I have rethought it and under no circumstances should the football field be named for Mike Campbell......one Campbell field is enough!!!!!!

I just don't feel at this time it would be prudent to expose any possible canidates.....even if it is just a rumor, surely since Top Gun is so close to the program he could tell us what he is hearing, Heck I get all my rumors at Wal-Mart

Did somebody's buddy get canned, I guess you need to to hang out at WALMART.

  12. :D

Bill Parcells is the front runner. :D

  13. I believe that Thunderstruck is "close" to the program and could have a very good idea on who will be the replacement. I have heard Bryant's name mentioned in the last month or so, but wondered if Whitley would hire a coach from a 1A school such as Pineville to head a 4A program that is looking to win immediatley?

Again, I say that if the Times-Tribune (Weekly World News (we don't read the TT for world news) weekly baby contest = paper seller) jumped the gun on this, then Top Gun (Whitley fan) was well ahead of them. In fact he probably got the TT rolling on the story. So if you want to say that breaking the story was tacky, look no further than your own fans.

This was basically old news (rumor) anyway. It had been going around the entire county since summer that this would happen exactly as it has unfolded thus far.

I'm sorry for reporting the news but when I said it was a done deal, it was a done deal. So now when are we allowed to talk about news, do we wait until it's in the paper, on the radio, on TV, WHEN? Do wait until the coach comes foward or when the school system comes foward with the information? The fact is Whitley needs a new coach and I'm willing to bet they do not make a fool of themselves.
