You hit the nail on the head. The play calling is suspect at Dixie. This Dixie team is too deep and too talented to already have 3 losses. I've been to a couple of Dixie's games this year and there is alot of rumbling from the fans. This team is better than 3-3. The Highlands game was the best they looked all year, and he totally went away from running the ball.

I don't pretend to know Coach Brossart's play calling or know anything about his offensive system. I do know he is a class act and that team plays for four quarters unlike a few years ago. 255 yards on the ground doesn't sound like Dixie went away from the running game against highlands. Both the RB and QB were over or near the century mark in yards in that game. Half the teams they have played (Cooper, CovCath, and Beechwood) have really good defenses.

Just going by what I saw in the Beechwood games versus CCH and Dixie. Dixie played Beechwood much, much more difficult than CCH.

Agreed. Beechwood came into this game averaging 41 points a game, and only allowing 6 (prior 5 game average). About a solid an effort you are going to get. Beechwood showed they can handle adversity, and Dixie showed they can hang with the best.

Come on…. CCH crushed Dixie 28-6, would have been 28-0 if not for a late 4th quarter KO return. Maybe Beechwood just had a down game or didn’t match up as well with Dixie as other teams, but no need to talk up Dixie as such a great team just because Beechwood didn’t blow them out.

Crush? The "would have been" scores are low hanging fruit. If you ask the Cov Cath coaches when they felt comfortable in that game they will tell you not until the fourth quarter. Dixie has had some success at all three phases of the game this season. It wasn't until this week that they had it all in one game. They just ran into a really good Beechwood team. Beechwood may have been exposed a bit last night. If you match up well with Beechwoods athletes you can force Hergott to run the ball. Good luck containing him, but he cannot consistently take hits all season and I hope Beechwood can find a little more balance getting others the ball. Good news for the tigers is their schedule favors that happening.

After last year and the good offensive numbers what has happened to the Dixie offense? They returned nearly everyone, have been protecting the QB this season, and the kids they returned obviously didn’t slouch in the weight room. It is almost criminal they cannot sustain drives with the athletes they have. The defense has done its job until it can’t after being on the field for so long. Anyone else that follows Dixie have a clue what it is? What are they missing? Is the QB just not hitting his mark? Is it play calling? Dixie is in for a long couple weeks if they cannot figure this out.

I think that Dixie just picked the wrong day/team to have a bad game. Lloyd and Conner you can make up for them (this season). But against the better teams, you have to be almost perfect. I think you are on to something here, I don't think Dixie has played a complete game yet. If they do "figure it out" they will be scary. However, they haven't yet and it will be hard to pick them in their next contest against Highlands.

  5. CovCath escaped with a win last year first game of the season for both teams. CovCath got up early in the first quarter and Dixie shut them out for the next three while Dixie left several points on the field and ran out of time. I’m sure neither team is taking this one lightly. Should be a good game. My heart says Dixie but My brain says CovCath. I think the home team wins it here by 7.

Cooper the first drive in the second half drove the ball 90 yards down to the 5 before stalling. Then had another drive down the the 10 yard line in the second half. So Cooper did still move the ball effectively in the second half, but Dixie did a good job getting stops once inside the ten and forcing field goals, or else Cooper wins the game kind of going away in the second half. That’s not even mentioning Cooper getting stopped inside the 5 right before half and having to settle for a field goal then too.  So your second half assessment is a little off, and the what if part can be used both ways.

With that said, it was two good teams last week with Dixie and Cooper. It is two good teams again this week with Ryle and Cooper. The battle of Union is always a good hard fought game. It should be a good one for sure.

I think what Finkle Ray is getting at is that there is a difference to being stopped, as opposed to the opposing team shooting itself in the foot. At the end of the day Cooper did enough to win because they are a good team. You have two good examples of drives in the second half for Cooper where they couldn't get it done that illustrate his point. Cooper didn't stall, they were stopped. Dixie shot itself in the foot with unforced errors the whole game. And for those Cooper fans I am not taking away from the really good things they did like control the clock, and find a way to cover two really good receivers. Cooper will need to figure out their offensive struggles in the red zone if they want to continue their winning ways. Ryle is a very similar team to what Cooper just saw, and if they can't figure out the red zone, they don't win.

Did they? Bryan Station lost to Dunbar in their last game. That is a team they beat earlier in the year. Was Dunbar even ranked in the top ten? IMO losing to Dunbar is worse than losing to the eventual state champion Trinity, who shut out Male in the title game.

Also, Dixie's strength of schedule was clearly better than Bryan Station's.

Station will be a better team this year, no doubt. I agree Dixie had a tougher road to hoe to get to Trinity last season. Traveling to Corbin, taking Cov Cath to the wire, and handled Beechwood. Then navigating two physical playoff games in a tough district. They limped into trinity with a few injuries (part of the game), and no special teams to speak of. This season, if they stay healthy, Dixie will be a top 5. They bring back almost the exact same team, with special teams, and a better O-Line IMO. Taking it a step further, Ryle should be in the conversation for top ten. The District 6 winner will have ran a gauntlet to get deep in the playoffs.

Any word on how it went?

Dixie scored 6 times in the first half, Mason scored once at the end of the half. Then after a few JV plays, called due to lightning. Really cool to see kids from Newport show up to see coach Wynn. He will get Mason County on the road to right.

There's much more to the story to getting better and winning championships than just scheduling. And I'd argue that building a tougher schedule isn't the first step in the process.

Exactly. Making sure your team is ready to start the season running is a good first step. Hearing Dixie will be scrimmaging a couple of Ohio teams to help prepare for the season. Not sure which schools or the dates. This can't be a bad thing.

Very conservative scheduling for a team that just finished one of their top 3 seasons in last 20 years.

They may need conservative at the front and back ends of that schedule. Dixies September and Early October look brutal. I like this schedule and really looking forward to seeing if Dixie can improve on last season. As a parent, I'm happy I don't have to drive far to watch any of these. That Corbin trip was a bear last season.

Just another reminder of how silly it is to group public and private schools together, in my opinion.

While I agree with where you're going with this, the private schools are still within the confines of the rules. Wether their students are from IN, OH, or somewhere else in KY, if the rules say they can be there on the roster, nothing you can do. If they weren't there wouldn't be a coach in the state that wouldn't jump all over it to report the violation. Your beef isn't with the private schools, it's with the governing body (KHSAA) and the current rules. Besides, public or private, Trinity is going to beat any school in this state public or private.

    Dixie vs Beechwood

Halftime score was Dixie 21 Beechwood 13

Final score Dixie 28 Beechwood 20

Dixie was impressive versus Beechwood but not sure I would say dominated.

I don't want to hijack a Trinity/Dixie thread with debate about a different team. But Beechwood was dominated. The time to defend your take was back in week 4. 290 plus yards on the ground for Dixie would disagree with your point. B-Wood couldn't do anything they wanted to after the first quarter and a half really. B-Wood did score quickly which highlights an important trend against Dixie, they get down early and have to fight back. Trinity no doubt will try to exploit this. While I mention Dixie has the horses to run with most teams, they do not have any in the stable to overcome a deficit to a team as good as Trinity.

  13. If there is one thing about this Dixie team that gives them a sliver of hope, is that one, big names have not scared them. Two, they played CovCath tight, then went down to Corbin and arguably should have won both of those contests. Went to Beechwood and dominated. Ryle is a top ten team. Dixie has faced early deficits in both playoff games and clawed back. There are a couple coaches on staff that were present for the 2014 championship game. I don't think this team is scared of anyone that lines up in front of them. They do have some horses to run with most teams. Im under no illusions of the most likely outcome of this game in favor of Trinity. I voted for Dixie because I'm a Dixie parent, stranger things have happened, and 2020 can't get any weirder.

  14. This will be an interesting game. I'm looking forward to being in the stands for this one. One school of thought is that the score from last game is an indication of Ryles dominance over Dixie in the last contest. So Ryle should dominate again. The other is that after the turnovers and lopsided score, the stats were still pretty even. This leads me to believe that if Dixie can protect the ball and minimize the mistakes, Dixie should win. I agree with most on here that it will be close and it will be the play in the trenches that will decide this. I'll take Dixie in a close physical game.

  15. I'm sure Dixie is chomping at the bit not only for this game, but for any game. Poor kids have been waiting for three weeks, through quarantines, cancelled games, and more quarantines. Hearing they finally got all of their team back on the field at various points over the last week. Not a moment too soon either.

I'm sure SK remembers all to well the game in October. I don't think Dixie scares them and SK believes they have a shot. I think Dixie wins this but Simon Kenton is too good a team and too well coached to get beat like they did last time.

  16. Isn’t this group of Holmes Sophomores the players that won back to back middle school championships? That squad was really good. Curious if they are contributing to this seasons wins. If Nevels keeps that core group together, the Dawgs may be great next year too.

Congrats to the Raiders players and staff on the continual improvements during the year and winning the district! I believe it breaks SK’s 2-year streak of winning the district. Sets up Dixie/SK rematch in first round of play offs.

Congrats to Ryle on winning the district. The NKY 6A playoffs should be a really fun set of games to watch this year.
