  1. There is a KHSAA rule that says schools have to report stats. If they don't there is a punishment off the top of my head i can't remember what is, but it is something significant. However, this year the rule is changing a bit now schools are required to submit stats to maxpreps. As a coach on a small staff it is difficult to find time to be able to report them, if your a school with a large staff its not big deal. Also, the reasoning behind it is for players recruitment. When college staffs search a kid to look for his stats they are more likely to start with his state association website to find his school, because that is the most trustworthy place for stats. Recruiting websites and hudl, for the most part let the players put in their stats, so they are more likely inflated. A college coach will trust the state association website is closest to actual numbers for a player

  2. At most I think individual awards and All-State Teams are a supplemental part of the recruiting picture. I don't think any kid has ever received a scholarship because they were simply an All-State or an Award Winner.

I don't think a kid has ever lost a scholarship because they didn't win an award or get named.

I also don't think a College Coach has based his decision to offer one player over another based off an All-State list or an individual award.

With that said, I think it figures into the overall picture of a prospect and the discussion points, more particularly in very small states with weak competition. If a prospect is up for debate I could see this being part of the case for or against, but never the sole determining factor.

I also think it probably has more value at the smaller college levels such as NAIA, D-II, D-III etc... I still won't say it is the end all be all... but at these levels when there is a much smaller budget to evaluate talent or go visit them or work them out at camps, I could see it weighing a bit more heavy in making someone stand out.

This was the point I was trying make. Clearly I wasn't doing a very good job. It is a part of the process.

  3. Exactly. He didn't win Mr. Football and his senior year was worse than his junior and maybe even his sophomore season. That goes without even mentioning the level of competition he faced. Where Harris won over college staffs all across the nation was what he did at the various camps he attended with important eyes watching him. Not as much what he may or may not have done on the field for Madison Southern. Nick Saban didn't say he didn't want Harris anymore because he lost out to Sindelar for Mr. Football and Saban didn't say he didn't want Harris anymore because he was too hurt to play Pulaski County on ESPN 2.

His senior season was worse cause he only played 7 games. Yes camps also play a big part because that is where scouts for rivals, 247 and others rate players. But he got noticed originally because of his ridiculous stats and then his camp performance solidified his offers. I'm not saying losing the award dooms a kid. I'm simply saying being up for the award or winning it can boost recruiting.

  4. The good coaches that I know, and I know a lot of them, do not let random people and media narrow or broaden their search and evaluation of players. Period. Mr.Football will be listed in the bio in the fall game program and nothing more.

I do too. So you think coaches sit down with a book of all 1 million players and evaluate them to find who they want?

  5. Fair enough. I just think the general point being made is that an award isn't going to make a difference in whether a college decides if they want a kid or not. It seems weird that an award would be a contributing factor. I could see them being curious about stats but I can't see them being overly concerned with stats either. Stats and awards didn't stop Damien Harris from becoming the starting RB at Alabama.

Pretty sure he was up for Mr. Football, I know he got hurt, he was also on of the states leading rushers his JR year, he ran for over 2,600 yards.

  6. So if a kid doesn't win All State or Mr. Football or an All Area award then colleges won't want the kid anymore?

Not Necessarily. They will then look at their stats and see which kids made it over him. They still evaluate mainly from watching video but the awards get the kids name in front of the coaches. There is over 1 million high school football players in the country. It is not easy for coaches to find every single one that is talented enough to play in college. Any award list or ranking that can narrow their search is where they will start

  7. I'm wrong a lot in life. I have somehow learned to overcome my deficiencies. I am sure you are correct about the recruiting sites. I am certain I am correct about the coaches.

The coaches absolutely care about stats and accolades. If you don't have productive stats and are not mentioned in any of the local awards why would a college coach think you would be successful against college competition. I worked in a D1 recruiting office and part of my job was gather stats from recruits on their board every week of their season. The days of if your good enough coaches will find you are over, you have to go and sell your ability to play or get your name out their in the media. That is how coaches find kids to evaluate. They do not just sit at a computer and search football highlights and watch every tape that pops up. They are directed to kids through these awards and websites.

  8. I can see where that might be a legitimate reason for concern. Much better than most I've read.

Typically, though, the kid who wins this award is either already committed or is high enough on the recruiting radar that I'm not sure the MrF award carries that much weight. I can see where it might help a kid who is on the bubble, but on the flip side I think these college recruiters base their decisions more on the measurable than a players accolades.

That is true for recruiting hotbeds like Florida and Texas, but Ky is not a highly recruited area traditionally so players from Ky are generally always on the bubble with a couple exceptions each year. I do agree that they focus more on measurables, but for our state specifically MrF can definitely make a difference

  9. Is all this venom really necessary? For a high school football award? I don't understand it. Do you complainers just have too much time on your hands these days and not enough to worry about?

Whoever wins the award will be happy and the award will be cherished just as much as if it were awarded two weeks ago. I don't think they will consider it a disgrace, a sad mishandling or a shame. I realize we have become a people of instant gratification, but come on. A little perspective and priorities may be the prescription here.

This award can be very beneficial in recruiting to whoever receives it, because it gets their name out there and can be the selling point to get a kid from a preferred walk-on to scholarship player. So waiting this long when most other states have already announced their Mr. Football can potentially hold up a players recruitment.

  10. Great balance by Boyle. Strong ground game. Strong enough pass game. Solid special teams. Great defense.

Give Waggener credit. #27 is a stud running back and #5 qb played a really smart game.

People will see the score and think Boyle played a cupcake....simply not true. This was a solid test for Boyle and I think they passed.

It sounds like Western Hills gave Central a great effort as well. Next week should be some great football!

Was a very good game to see. Waggener played well and proved they are going to be a team to be reckoned with. By the way #27 is the back up running back for Waggener they're starter, usually #1, was injured Thursday night

  11. All I can say to this is wow! Two kids came from Manual correct? One of which has offers from UK and UL, so I don't think "we just coached the guys we inherited up" works in this situation. The question I would have out of their transfers how many have made an immediate impact?

So you are saying the only reason this team is winning is because of two players? Have you ever played or watched football? 2 people can not win a football game. People are so hung up on these transfers they give no credit to players that were there before or the coaches. The transfers that everyone is talking have made an impact but they are only 4 kids 2 of which have only played in 3 games. So if you think you can take those 4 kids by themselves and win with no other players you're welcome to try but you're going to be very disappointed. 82% of the starters on this team were on the team last year. So next time you want call foul because a kid transfers (which happens every year with the same numbers) or you want to question the coaching job a staff has done (and this staff has done something incredible coaching these kids up) you should get a quick football lesson from someone who knows something about the sport.
