Sindelar named 2014 Mr. Football
Caldwell County High School had claimed just about every football
award imaginable in its history, except one ... until now!
Tiger quarterback Elijah Sindelar has capped his storied high school
career at CCHS by being named the 2014 Kentucky Mr. Football.
The Associated Press confi rmed to The Times Leader on Friday afternoon
that Sindelar had won its Player of the
Year award, even though that award and the
AP’s all-state football team is not scheduled
for statewide release until this (Saturday)
afternoon.
“I think that’s a big honor for our school
and our community,” said Caldwell football
coach David Barnes, who was also notifi ed of
the award on Friday. “I think what Elijah has
done for our football program speaks volumes
about what kind of player he is and what kind
of kid he is. He is very deserving of the Mr.
Football award.”
Sindelar was chosen over six other fi nalists
for the award. In addition to his sterling play on the gridiron, the publicity
he has received over his four years at Caldwell helped earn him enough
votes from media statewide to win the award.
“They say it’s hard for a kid from western Kentucky to win the award,
but there have been several,” noted Barnes. “Corey Robinson at Lone Oak,
Pookie Jones at Calloway and the two at Fort Campbell, Antonio Andrews
and Micah Johnson, are just some of them.”
Sindelar got national publicity in his very fi rst start as a freshman when
he threw for 552 yards and six touchdowns in Caldwell’s 80-62 shootout
win at Calloway County.
A lengthy recruiting battle between Kentucky and Purdue furthered his
lore among many football followers in this state.
“I think that game he had his sophomore season in the state championship
