  1. In this ONE game, both CovCath and Holmes shot poorly all around, as well as having trouble finishing at the rim.

Some of that can be attributed to many having off shooting nights, while some can be related to rushing shots because of the around the rim "D" both teams were executing.

Although ONE game is hard to use to define a team, and many agree that CovCath is good and show that they're better at finishing, but this game actually was neck n' neck until late.

Nothing exactly pointed to either team being terribly dominant over the other, while both teams have shown at times this year that they have the potential to rule their opponents when they're clicking on all cylinders.

If they played each other 10 times, and even with better shooting nights from either or both, I don't think we'd ever see one team truly dominate the other.

Statistically the top 4 for Holmes hold double figure averages, and is something that most coaches can only dream of.

Aside from Bolden, the other 3 don't always display that they have complete all around games, but McClendon and Mullins at times can show that they're not too far off from doing so, and Avery is certainly at least a dependable inside threat even though he might be limited elsewhere.

Avery is certainly nothing to sneeze at in the all important role that he does play, and certainly deserves top 5 recognition in that particular role within the region.

Mullins has grown this season in leaps and bounds with his game, and is more impressive than he's been given credit for. I expect without hesitation, for him to be one of the top 10 players in the region his senior year.

McClendon would be the point guard for most teams not named Holmes, and is a great dependable second option for the Bulldogs when Bolden is out of the game. He's tough defensively, smooth with his handles, dependable from the line, crafty in creating his own shot, streaky from the 3, but just like Bolden, it's not out of the realm of possibilities for him at times to get hot.

CovCath, while having good all around games from CVH and Theobald, also round out their team with dependable role players.

Although Bo Schuh aims at an all around game, his asset to the team is mostly from his inside presence. His 3 ball from what I've seen is often short armed, and not reliable enough.

Flood has recently shown more all-aroundness in his game than we first were aware of, and has become their missing link and secret weapon.

Romes is tough and handles a lot of important duties that don't show up in the stats, but in scoring his strength is occasionally finishing at the rim, with no other real shooting threat to speak of.

Both teams can call on a few guys from their bench to give good minutes, but reliability there is intermittent, and not always a given, but still worthy of acknowledgment.

Holmes does have issues with their consistency, and it's still to be seen if they can correct that.

In the first few minutes of the Cooper game they looked like the Globetrotters showing what awesomeness they are capable of, but after Cooper adjusted we saw that for awhile Holmes failed to respond, quickly not looking as awesome as they initially did, but ultimately pulling it together to finish.

I still have to agree that the top 4 for Holmes are very talented players worthy of the praise that some might give them, and that at the end of the day their success will come when consistency and team chemistry for them hit their stride.

CovCath is closer to having the team chemistry that Holmes is still searching for, and is why they were able to finish, when Holmes could not.

The top 3 teams in this region are all capable of ultimately wearing the 9th Region crown.

We still need to see how NewCath and Holmes fair against each other, but I expect that too to be a close game where the Breds won't be able to show the dominance that they so often have this year against lesser opponents.

It's still to be seen if Dixie can be in this discussion as they have a nice win/loss record, but still lack a signature win to help us know where they really stand.

It wouldn't be fair to not give each of the top 3 teams a nod for the qualities, and I could be terribly wrong, but my gut is not seeing either of them bringing home the big prize from Rupp this year.

Of course CovCath shocked us all and did so last season, but I think that a repeat for them, or the 9th Region is asking a bit much. I do hope that I'm wrong.

Although the discussion of Holmes' top 4 can go back and forth, and my personal view of them still doesn't settle anything either, as it's just my opinion among many, I'm not too far off from believing that they are worthy in the Top 15 discussion, and most definitely the top 20.

This might not be the greatest Holmes team that we've ever seen, but by comparison some programs could only wish to just once have all the talent that this team has.

It's not exactly fair to these guys to let comparisons of past seasons to determine their current worth within the 9th Region, in this the 2014/2015 season.

You don't get a top 3 ranking within the 9th Region by having average players, nor do you stay neck n' neck 'til late in the game with the number 1 team either.

Again this was just ONE game, but if CovCath could've separated themselves sooner in it, then I might have to agree that Holmes is average, but keeping it close 'til late pretty much tells me that they are not.

Their top 4 are talented players worthy of being in the discussion of some of the best in the region. Getting all of their elements together in proving their worthiness IMO is not at all out of the realm of possibilities.

When the regional pairings come to light, I don't think that any team will breath easy if they come to find that they must face them in the first round, and even if that team happened to be NewCath.

Holmes brings a balanced threat with talented, and some of the best in the region, players.

Very good assestment of Holmes team and their season up to this point. Lots of knowledge in one post!

  2. KENTUCKY 2016 ? Next Up Recruits

According to this McClendon is one of the top 20 players in the talented Kentucky junior class. He's ranked ahead of Snapp who most would say is top 5 in the region. I think it's safe to say that he and Bolden are possibly the two best guards in the 9th. As far as Mullins and Avery they haven't been properly evaluated in the past due to injuries in the case of Mullins and lack of playing time for Avery.

Holmes basketball gets holiday gift ? depth

Good story on Holmes depth and the fact that they can still play without Bolden.

  3. Walter, always respect your responses, but from what I saw last night I completely disagree with you. Bolden yes, McClendon maybe, but the other two no way.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this topic.

Before the last two games Mullins was Holmes best player for a stretch. Rather than being untalented I think Holmes has multiple guys that can be the guy that carries them and sometimes they struggle to find their role. Sometimes the most talented teams are the hardest ones to mesh together unless they all buy in. I dont think Holmes has reached that point yet but they've definitely improved over the course of the season. They've regressed the last couple games but are still a team that nobody will want to see in the regionals.

  4. Bolden and McClendon are probably both top 3 guards in the region with the other in consideration being Pangallo. Mullins I consider to be a wing player and also one of the three best in the region. Avery is easily one of the top 3 bigs. Bolden, McClendon and Avery would all be top 10 players in the region and Mullins would fall probably in the 11-15 range. All 4 are probably the most athletic at their positions not that necessarily means anything in terms of wins and losses. I'll go on to say that I could see Mullins and McClendon both garnering some D2 and possible lower level D1 college interest before their time at Holmes is complete.

  5. Just bad basketball by both teams but I was very disappointed in Holmes. They have no offensive flow and are lacking talent in a bad way.

Officiating was just absolutely and disgustingly bad for both teams. I know I have gotten on the refs in other threads, but there is no one that can say those refs did anything right in that game. There has to be a fix or find better than these guys. They should have to return their pay for last nights game.

Lacking talent? Undisciplined and out of control at times maybe, but they are in no way lacking of talent. It could be argued that they have 4 players that are within the top 15 in the entire region. Bolden, McClendon, Mullins and Avery are all capable of carrying the team and leading them in scoring on any given night. If you go by this one game then neither team appeared very talented. This game was evenly played with the exception of the very end and that had nothing to do with talent but had more to do with execution and discipline.

  6. Holmes missed at least 5 wide open shots at the rim and a couple more that were contested but should have been made. Game got a little chippy. Avery had a nice game but was also in foul trouble for much of the game. Officials missed a technical foul on Schuh at the beginning of the game, he pushed Arnold in the back for no apparent reason. Other than a two minute or so stretch towards the end of the 3rd, the game was neck and neck. Very entertaining game, but low scoring game.

  7. Holmes has a very good team. Going into this game they were one of the hottest teams in the state. The outcome of this game changes nothing for me in regards to how I feel about Holmes. They simply had an off night. Holmes has played a very nice schedule and haven't really had a bad loss all year. I think Holmes just had a Tuesday night dud on the road and I look for them to bounce back vs Cov Cath. Holmes belongs in the top 25 there's no doubt about that, they just belong in the 20-25 range. Also almost every team comes out dunking in warm ups during the first 4 minutes or so, Holmes still stretches and runs drills just like every other team. This is one of the most disciplined and well coached Holmes teams I've seen play in a while, Coach L knows what he's doing. People are reaching way to far in this thread, Holmes simply struggled.

  8. 3 was LJ Miller, I think. Got my first look at some of their freshman guards tonight in that jv game...all nice players. Quick, athletic, and decent size for only being frosh.

They also have a kid that I had never seen before that apparently has been with them all year. Don't remember his name but he looked to be a legit 6'5 already and has some thickness to him. Interested to see how he progresses these next couple years. Was told he has improved a lot since the beginning of the season.

It seemed like the JV squad has gotten shook up since last time I seen them vs St. Henry. I feel like I seen at least 3 new faces with miller and the big you spoke of being a couple of them. I didn't see Xavien Bolden and maybe a couple others. I know brolley transferred. JV looked good tonight.

  9. Bolden picked up 3 fouls in what seemed like only a minute of action. Bolden and Mclendon played really well. Holmes really needs to learn how to protect a lead. They had this game licked and let Madison force them into rushed possessions. Just because you break the press doesn't mean you can't pull the ball pack out and run some clock. Overall Holmes is really starting to gel really well. And that block by bolden, wow! I thought Holmes really maintained their cool during what become a chippy game. I think that can be attributed to coach L, he seems to have a grip on this team. For Madison #23 was impressive but didn't look to score enough. I could see them competing for the 11th region crown.

  10. Gray...was a man among boys.

Those two are easily one of the top backcourts in the state. Very impressive duo.

Gray, yes that was him. Super quick, strong and smooth. He has the unique ability to change directions and contort his body in traffic while staying completely under control. I loved how he attcked as soon as he got the ball. He and weaver are special. Definitely agree that they have one of the better backcourts in the state.

  11. I'd love to hear more about the game and less about the lack of love for NCC or the refs.

How did Weaver put 30 on the Breds?

Weaver put up his points in a variety of ways. He finished at the rim for a few and ones. He had a few treys. A couple mid range jumpers. For a kid his size he was very impressive and I was wondering myself if he's getting any college interest. I heard he puts up close to 30 every game. Their other guard was also very impressive, I think his last name was Price. He had a little John wall in his game.

  12. Also as far as varsity goes bolden, Mullins and McClendon have to be one of the better guard trios in the state. Size will hurt Holmes but they have guards that can hang with anyone. Very impressed with boldens unselfishness this season, right now it may be hurting them but it will be key as the year goes long as its allowing other guys to get confidence. Holmes also struggled to figure out the zone but attacked it in the second half and looked like a different team.

  13. very impressed with commodore in the JV game, he is very mature and fundamental for his age. Also the big guy #11 looks like he could get more varsity time as the year progresses, he and Avery would give Holmes some nice size down low. Daniels was also a very nice guard that I had never heard of and Englemon was a lights out shooter. There was also a second englemon that looked good at the end of the JV game. I also couldn't tell but it sounded like the announcer kept saying bolden in the JV game, that kid looked like he had the potential to become a very big boy, he had some huge legs and a body to grow into. Do you have a full official roster Walter?

  14. One other note I heard some fans dogging listerman. The man is a heck of a coach and one of the best ever in nky. They were complaining about his lack of fire and passion which I think is ridiculous. I personally felt the players responded better to his style than boohers. I seen less lip and attitude from the players than I have in some time, despite the struggles

  15. I actually thought bolden played some good defense. Holmes I think will be fine, everyone still just has to find their role. I really like the stroke from Mullins and I'd like to see him and avery attack the rim more. I also think commodore looks like a player, just needs some more confidence. McClendon should shoot more also and not be so hesitant. Once everyone attacks and stops relying on bolden I think they'll be fine. I was also impressed with Boldens demeanor and attitude last night. He showed good senior leadership and didn't let the struggles get to him. His athleticism is off the charts. Love watching the kid play.
