  1. We were told about the games being shortened to allow for mandatory water breaks. The referees relied on the air horn that blew to halt all play. At that point, they (medical staff down there) take a new measurement of the heat index every 30 minutes... just like games are delayed for 30 minutes after each thunder/strike. Even if communication was limited, every coach is required to take training annually by the KHSAA with an emphasis on the heat index... so should have been no surprise.

Papa Johns and Kettle Corn were in full effect, but in that heat nothing sounded good.

The cost is crazy and they haven't provided t-shirts the past couple of years.

I think that has covered most comments.

  2. Ballard is a good team. Well organized, move the ball well, and play physical. Their physicality caught up with them though earning them 3-4 yellows and a straight red (towards the last 5 minutes or so of the 2nd half). At half the score was 2-0. Wheels fell off in the 2nd half after O'Hara and Russell left the game with injuries. SK had some good opportunities that they were unable to capitalize on the entire game... Ballard finished all of theirs. The score line would suggest a pounding and pure domination by Ballard, but possession and chances were not as one sided.

  3. Lewandowski's 5th goal in 9 minutes against Wolfsburg. Epic. A "why not" moment. But we're probably talking about KY high school goals.

Or his 10th goal in 3 games? Guy is on fire right now.

Chris Davis (SK) versus Walton off a corner, outside of 18 opposite side of where corner was taken, volleyed into upper v.

Kareem (Ryle) versus SK cross/shot. In transition, left side about 25 out, gets head up and looks to cross. Cross is miss hit and goes upper side netting.

  4. Why can't Town and Country be used? Yes, I know they have soccer going on too but if it is scheduled in advance. There is also College of Mt. St. Joe, that is a nice field too.

In any case... whether a college or another facility not owned by a high school you have to pay to rent it out. Rental for 3-4 days is a nice chunk of change that eats into the profit for hosting.

  5. From people I have talked to over the past few years, NKU and Thomas More don't want the games because it interferes with there soccer teams, and unlike the basketball tournament their is no money to be made off hosting the soccer tournament so they are unwilling to adjust their soccer programs schedule

You complain about Ryle, Highlands, and Dixie always getting to host, but if you read the KHSAA policy and requirements on host schools they are 3 of the 4 schools who can host. All the other schools are unable to host due to various reason. St Henry is eligible to host, but is only in the rotation for girls regions. My best guess is do to the smaller seating capacity. From a coach I know in Lexington, the Khsaa will be adding to the requirements for hosting including making the field requirements wider, which may even limited the pool of candidates to host smaller. Right now Ryle field is the closest we have in Northen Kentucky to some of the Lexington fields. they are smaller in width to Dunbar, but almost equal in size to Henry Clay and Lafayette

I do believe that home field is also overrated at the high school level. I believe once you to get final 8 of higher yes should be played on neutral field, but up to the round home field doesn't necessarily change anything. In a perfect world go with neutral, but as we know this isn't an area of concern for khsaa

Not sure they are going to go wider on the requirement considering when they put in the requirement last year it was 65 yards wide and they changed it to 60 this year.

  6. The KHSAA website requires the teams to report the stats......part of the stats are players that played in the V games and it tracks how many games over the season....

Apply the eligibility to this..........if they play in over 20 % (or insert your own parameter here) they become ineligible for the JV tournament.....if a team doesn't report stats, then they aren't eligible.....two problems solved...

With that said......it wouldn't apply to the Freshman tournament....the only thing you need here is Freshman or not?

    Just a thought.

Not bad if KHSAA would actually support the ability to do such. I do disagree with your parameter around playing time only. A player should be allowed if you have a Varsity player that comes off the bench every game for 20 minutes (assuming they're not a Senior of course), but are a normal starter for the JV team. I think we need to distinguish between the starters is all. If you're a normal Varsity starter for xx% then you shouldn't be allowed. The KHSAA doesn't track starters though.

  7. And that is my point. I had the misfortune to attend the final last year and it was a sad affair of trash talking and bad attitude. The tournament fosters bad feelings as it is now. I agree we need to continue having it but some changes need to be made and enforced.

I hear what you're saying, but everyone says it every year without offering up "how". How are you going to monitor and therefore enforce it? If that can be figured out and it's feasible... bring it up to the varsity head coach to bring up at one of their meetings.

  8. By all means let's follow the everyone gets a trophy mentality even though everyone wants an asterisks added to the record to show they may have brought down varsity players.

How does my statement imply that? The boys enjoy it... that's what it is about. There are very little facts people have to support their claims. A lot of speculation is made. It may happen due to a number of causes (just or not). Every year someone has an excuse... which are the same excuses provided during regular season play. Field was awful, refs were awful, they dropped a varsity player. In the end, the boys should (and do) take the challenge and have fun doing that.

It does get annoying every year we hear the same thing so I agree, but this tournament and the Freshman one is unique to NKY. The coaching association enjoys putting it together and the boys enjoy it too.

  9. Last year Brossart brought varsity players down, NCC has been known to do so for this tournament, not sure how else. IMO it is an embarrassment and shows a lack of respect to the JV players, sends a "you're not good enough" message to the JV players. Bringing varsity players "down" says it all. Who wants to be brought "down", a good coach, a good program coaches their players up not down.

I'll have to let you know Friday. If scores are to be the judge SK beat Grant 6-0 (Brossart 2-1) and Scott 4-0 with the game cancelled at half time (Brossart 2-0).

  10. Here we go. Let's fight ideals so important we can't make rules to uphold them.

I almost wish we would do away with this tournament. The atmosphere is nothing but bad feelings and mistrust during every game.

Yeah, let's do away with the only hardware the boys get to compete for

  11. Oldham County looks tough. Clayton Wirth (#9 ) with 27 goals and 7 assists involved in just under half of OC goals. Oldham County has opponent's Maher Rating of 6.7... so pretty strong. How did Wirth look?

Not seeing the team yet and ranked 6th in the state according to Maher I expected to be at awe of the team, but wasn't. They possess the ball well. #10 Huerta is their go-to player in the middle and looks to find #9 Wirth up top. #7 Thomas is a pretty good center back. Likes to push up in the attack and has a rifle of a left footed shot.

  12. Game was at Oldham. They ran a two man crew for both JV and Varsity. Yes, a two man crew for Varsity.

0-0 at half. Oldham's first goal was questionable on if it was offsides, but nothing was called. Took the wind out of SK's sails a bit. Other 2 goals were 20-25 yard blasts.

SK had a few opportunities with break aways from O'Hara but couldn't capitalize.

  13. Walton Verona definitely has a lot of work to do. It will be no easy task for the coach.

Jake Poland is a great keeper. Got very unlucky against sk. Goals were more so defensive errors that left to "tap ins" or one on one breakaways. Most of the time WV can look to depend on him

I thought Poland and Edelbroich both had a good game. Both with solid saves and both denied multiple 1:1 opportunities.

    ... tap ins, 1:1, and 2 rips upper v

  14. 1-0 at half. Goals by Marsh (2), O'Hara, Davis, and Seger.

Not the best officiated game IMO. Cards and fouls not given on both ends when they should have been.

Martin, Leffler, and Moran played well. Those 3 synced up real nicely. Leffler's speed and foot work was a handful for SK's defense, but able to maintain the shut out.

  15. One minor correction... PK tally was 8-7. CJ had one save and SK put one over the crossbar. Adi had 3 saves.

Good summary stepover. Morgan was absolutely a class act. Didn't matter the nature of the foul. Always there to help an opposing player up... even during the run of play.
