I wish I could get ahold of the highlight film for that year... It was definitely a season to remember

I'd like to think Henderson would get over the hump this upcoming season and get back to rupp. They should be pretty deep if everyone returns from last years squad who gave hoptown a pretty good scare in the regional semis. Only lose 1 senior and most returning have quality game experience.

27 of them.... Wow! Also amazed that knott county pulled their players with considerable time left in the game. Henderson did a better job in the second half on the glass

Whoa... Let's not overlook Henderson Co. They're playing their best basketball as of late. Christian Co beat them by single digits with some questionable calls down the stretch. Had hoptown up at half at their place. Don't be so quick to make final fixtures just yet.

Just read the article in the courier. Pretty cool! Hendo could definitely use this to their advantage. Get a few more kids out.

As far as this year goes, if they ever learn to consistently figure out the first quarter they'll be fine.

If they can stay healthy and actually have everyone available to play I still say Henderson is tops in the district. Got a chance to see DJ Mitchell in action today. He can be special - along with Ware if he continues to develop. If this group sticks together, maybe they can get to Rupp in a couple years. MAYBE.

If it's the Calloway kid you're referring to, he transferred to union county after he was dismissed from the team about mid December. Decent scorer but definitely a defensive liability. I don't think they miss him much.

Henderson's comeback falls short

On the verge of the second blowout loss of the season's opening week, Henderson County made a maddening second-half comeback and took Warren Central to the wire in a 60-59 loss in Friday's home opener.

The 0-2 Colonels, who were dismantled in Tuesday's 78-35 loss at Harrison, were having flashbacks in the first half against the 2015 Fourth Region runner-up. Riding the strength of burly 6-6 Darrell Bowman, the Dragons started the game with a 15-4 lead and were heading toward an easy night with a 31-14 advantage midway through the second quarter.

With a switch to aggressive man-to-man defense in the second half, Henderson County began pecking away at the lead by forcing the Dragons into 10 turnovers in the third period alone.

"Some of our experienced players said, 'Coach, I think we can really play man.' I wasn't so sure," Henderson County coach Tyler Smithhart said. "We hadn't worked on it a whole lot lately. They did a fantastic job. De'Angelo (Ware) was a wrecking ball away from the ball. We contained dribble penetration. We fought the big guy in the post."

Bowman, who had 19 points and seven rebounds in the first half, was held scoreless and had one rebound in the second half.

"(Karteece Rollins and Antoine Calhoun) did a great job of leaning on him and making him work. Our guards did a much better job out front to make it real hard to get it in there to him," Smithhart said.

After trailing 41-26 at the half, the Colonels used an 9-0 run and pulled within two on Ware's driving basket with 4:48 to play.

Tristen Murray, who scored the Dragons' last eight points, answered with a driving basket of his own. Murray made four straight free throws to increase the lead to 60-54 with 1:03 to go. After Ware scored another driving basket and Warren Central missed consecutive one-and-one opportunities, Cartel Gilbert sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 7.2 left to the cut the lead to 60-59. The Dragons were called for traveling in the backcourt, giving the Colonels a chance for the win with 3.6 to play.

Gilbert put up a shot from the other corner, and Matthew Watkins couldn't convert on the offensive rebound attempt before the clock expired.

"You would have liked to had better execution, but that's on me. We don't have a lot of out of bounds plays in because we've been working on fundamentals," Smithhart said. "Cartel did a great job to have the presence of mind to just get one up."

Calhoun, who came off the bench, and Ware, who drew his first start, led Henderson County with 13 points apiece. Rollins added 12.

Bowman's 19 points topped Warren Central (1-1), and Murray added 15 points.

The team's performance in the comeback is something that Smithhart believes he can build on.

"They've got a little bit more in them than I think they thought they had," he said. "There's no moral victories. It's an 'L.' But there's so many positives that we can build on."

Henderson County plays another Bowling Green-area school for its next game, visiting 2015 state runner-up Bowling Green on Dec. 11. Warren Central faces Central Hardin Saturday in the Corky Cox Classic at Larue County.
