  1. I haven't looked at the webcast, but did anyone see the offsetting face mask calls on NewCath's Austin Neff's 90 yard fumble return for a TD (that obviously got negated)?

Also, on the 4th down pass that gave the Camels a 1st down under 30 seconds to go, from my POV, the receiver ran his route into the defender, plus I don't think that ball was remotely catchable.......yes or no?

That does not apply to high school. It can be called on the complete other side of the field if they so choose. Most officials will use some discretion but if the interference is to the receiver the ball is being thrown to it will be called even if the ball is too high or low to be caught. High School rule.

  2. 0 professions have had frozen wages for 20 years. Head coaches can normally arrange a pretty good deal as they come in: AD, weightlifting pay, extended days, limited class load, etc. , but assts don't get that. I guarantee you if you poll assts most make under 2 grand. If you just paid them for a 10 week season at 10 hours a week that would be $5 an hour. Good pay in 1986.

But assistants at schools with good programs or a desire to be good programs never work 10 week schedule at 10 hours a week. You are expected to work year round. At the end of the season you might get a little time off before the weights start. This goes to spring ball. Spring ball is 10 practices spread out over 15 days. after spring ball you have weights till school lets out. After school lets out more time is spent lifting and doing practice type stuff for the upcoming season. Then you get your true time away the dead period. But I venture to say that most coaches are still doing some kind of prep during this time. Then post dead period is spent with practices and trying to squeeze in 7 on 7's before practice officially begins in August.

I would venture to say most assistant coaches at these schools are making at least $3,000 or more to coach. But when you look at the total hours spent on football its a lot less than $5.00 and hour. And for a head coach its even more time spent. And it's not just football it can be other sports as well. I believe the time required to do this is way too much. But if your not doing it you and your program aren't any good in parent and message board opinions because you are not trying as hard as other programs. Everyone knows Trinity and X are best because they outwork people. They have proven that to us several times on this message board.

But those administrators that know nothing about sports think that $3,000 is a lot for a 10 week season.

  3. If your not getting a D1 scholarship you are in most cases paying some money to go college. The smaller the school the more money you are paying. And usually the smaller the school the more expensive they are. That's why many small schools have football. This is a part of the decision making process for the high school players. Some just decide it is not worth the cost at a small school to just keep playing. Some figure it out a year or two later, that's one reason why 40-50 freshmen at small schools can turn into 10 or less seniors. They all have to decide if the time, physical nature, quality of education, and MONEY are worth it.

  4. When the Scott girls played the CC girls i mentioned on the thread that neither team could be happy with the officiating and got a lecture on being tired of hearing complaints about officials, officiating is a hard job, you should try it before judging, etc. It sounds the same way in this game. Guess they did a good job if both sides where complaining. Heard the parents/fans for both sides were brutal.

  5. Lol....Yes he is homegrown. His oldest brother wore #10 and played Middle LB on the 2010 State Team and his other brother is a Soph D Lineman for the Birds this year. Brycen Huddleston will leave a Major Mark on the Highlands program before he is done.

Good player but just because his brothers played there doesn't mean he's home grown talent. :sneaky:

  6. To the Bolded. There were only two in recent past who went to CovCath from St Joe Cold Spring and they were brothers. Currently, Highlands and NCC are the only competition for players. Eventually Brossart will be in competiton with NCC for players, but I don't see them competing with Campbell Co. IMO, stating Bellevue, Newport and Dayton, along with Silver Grove as competition for football is a stretch.

Wasn't trying to say they were competing with those other schools for players. Just stating a fact that there are 8 high schools in Campbell County which is not a large county population wise to begin with. The two brothers who went to Cov Cath were awesome players. Before that Madden and Keys went there. Not saying Campbell was ever on the radar of any of these four but that is the rub. Somehow they have to be able to keep talent like this at home. If all the players that live in Campbell County's school district had gone to school there over the years I think they would have a nice tradition in football. How do you keep them home? That was my original point.

  7. Coach Lickert is a very good coach but as the saying goes its not always the X'z and O's its the Jimmy's and Joe's. A lot of people don't realize there are eight high schools in Campbell County:

    Newport

    Dayton

    Bellevue

    Highlands

    Newport Central Catholic

    Silver Grove

    Brossart

    Campbell County

Two of those are 2 of the strongest traditional powers in the state. Many of the best players who were suppose to go to Campbell County have gone to one of these two schools. They have even lost good players to Cov Cath over the years. The years Campbell County has had their best years have been when they have kept their best talent at home. They just have to find a way to consistently do that. This has been and continues to be the biggest obstacle that the Camels face.

  8. I agree, but a school system if they want a person bad enough will do whatever it takes or to create a job or move them to another position.

Bellevue screwed up. It will cost them.

That may have been the case years ago but very few school systems can do this anymore. That's why you see so many systems take the easy way out and hire someone on staff maybe less qualified or a local para-professional who will do the job. Some big school districts can still "create" or find positions but very few small schools can afford to do it.

Johnny is a good football coach and will have no trouble finding a job coaching football. It will be finding a teaching job that will be the challenge. Hopefully it will be closer than his current drive.

  9. Talk to me when it means something. I didn't have to be there heard it right from the coaches mouth. It's a waste of my time to even post on this any longer. Let me know when CC wins a state championship. It seems the program is getting better so you could be checking back in the next few yrs. Good Luck

We are sorry to have wasted a little time of the mighty Highlands fans. Geez!

And people wonder why Highlands fans are so despised.

  10. They started their 1's in the 2nd half. Why not take a knee with a minute left? I rest my case.

Oh how soon bluebird fans forget. They wrote the book on running up the score on people. Why do you think no one in NKY would play them when Dale was coach. They were far superior in every way to the teams they were playing and would not just beat people but continually crush people. No taking a knee, no running the ball instead of throwing passes, etc. Let me ask you this, do you think its a coincidence that teams are scheduling Highlands now that Dale retired?

You can't have it both ways.

  11. Because it is extremely hard to make a schedule. There are enough 5A and 6A schools to make a schedule in NKY but all the schools won't play or can't make it work on open weeks they have. Its very tough to schedule Ohio schools on a two year contract because the week you play them, Week 3 for example, might be different on successive years. If you travel you kill your gate and unfortunately football has to make money for the rest of the high school programs. Why do you think Highlands wanted to get back to playing NKY teams? It was more of a gate issue than anything else. So you are left with very good 1A and 2A programs that are willing to play you to make their programs better.

Making a schedule is a lot more difficult than most people think. I do agree they shouldn't play because for the big schools they are in a no win situation. Win and your suppose to and loose god forbid and your a terrible program. Never mind that they are Championship caliber teams. As others have stated the gap between the big schools and smaller schools does seem to be getting wider.

If you can find better competition that meets all your needs than do it. I venture to say that they are the best competition available when all variables are looked at.

Again the question should not be should NCC and BW continue to play 5A AND 6A schools.......they will because it will make them better. The question is why would 5A and 6A teams keep scheduling BW and NCC if they can find better competition????

I understand the NKY 5A and 6A has not been all that great compared to the Louisville competition and has been subject to up and down years (heck 4-5 years ago I thought Ryle was going to dominate 6A in NKY for the next 10 years).

But I think the NKY 6A teams should only be playing 1 game at most against small school competition if they have any designs on becoming state contenders consistently..

  12. One big problem I have is besides football and maybe wrestling and track, most sports are cut sports. A lot of fundraising activities take place outside of the playing season and I always thought it unjustified to ask a player to participate in a fundraiser for a team where they might get cut. What if they are the biggest fundraiser but not a very good player, do you keep them? During the season fundraising opportunities are tougher because of game and practice schedules. So pay for play seems like a better option. And to be honest i think a lot of parents nowadays would rather pay it then participate (time) in fundraising activities. It would be nice to offer a way to work off these fees but you can't do that according to the Red Book. Money raised can not be ear marked for one kid. It has to go to the program as a whole. Bands were famous for this. You would get X amount of dollars/credit for working an event. Not allowed anymore.
