Do you know which major counties have adopted the sheriff merit board?
Jefferson county and Boone county. I think there are couple more. It works and protectes the deputies and protectes the taxpayers investment. Like I said in previous post most sheriff's do not want to give up their power. No one person elected or oppointed should have all the say the deputy sheriff merit board gives the checkes and balance to the system in sheriff's office.

Remember everyone, when you work for a Sheriff's Department and it is election time you are expected to support the current Sheriff to the nth degree. Believe me I have heard horror stories about not only support, but time, donations to the campaign, etc. It is a completely unfair situation to put a law enforcement officer in.
There are a few counties in Kentucky that have adopted the deputy sheriff merit board. If all counties where required to do so this would protect those deputies from the political firings that go in on this state every four years. Without the merit board protection this costs taxpayers millions every four years. But most sheriffs do not want to give up their power to hire and fire. Merit boards are the answer. just my opinion.

You can spin this incident any way you like, I am giving general advice based on my experience with a number of disgruntled employees that have worked there over the years.
So the dog has two bad bites that has been reported in the news. So a vicious dog what do they do? If they give him away they still have liability. So at what point do you protect the county from further liability?

My only advice to the Sheriff's office would be your organization is too big to cover major incidents up.
I think they wanted the handler and family to have time to deal with the loss. So what is there to cover up. Dog had a history End of story. Your response is welcomed

His health insurance will be free with his retirement so taking what his department offers doesn't make much sense unless the plan is superior.
I believe the county of Boone health insurance is better than the state's retirement insurance. Mybe I'm wrong but it is what I have be told by others that have retired

Do you Believe everything channel five reports ? I think the way they report the news is why they are last in the ratings each year. Love to hear your responseChannel 5 report last night noted that upon returning on Jan. 4, sheriff will be paid as beginning sheriff ($90,000 plus) instead of veteran sheriff ($100 grand plus). But, obviously, his total take-home will be higher with the double-dipping. And when he returns on Jan. 4, would he not be eligible to go back on regular health-care insurance? One would think so. He'll again be a full-time sheriff and not a contract employee. -
So that in itself is a big savings to the tax payer in Boone county

He can not draw another retirement . If he did retire and comes back it saves the tax payers thousands if dollars

Sheriff department has said they are preparing their case to go to the commonwealth attorney and grand jury.

The citizens of Boone county will get all the evidence in this case and make a decision if the deputy was justified in his actions. It is called the grand jury.
