There is absolutely no way car buying habits have dropped fuel consumption to nearly one third of what it was nine years ago. You would have to see nothing but Hybrids on the road and even then it would not reduce fuel consumption as much as it has reportedly gone down. I question how much it has actually gone down as that reduction is really hard to imagine.
Average MGP in America for new cars and trucks combined in 2004 just under 20 mpg, average today is right at 24 mpg. It is impossible for that increase in MPG to drop consumption to roughly 40% of what it was in 2004.
Yes, to answer your question we have chose to drive less over the last several years due to gas prices.
