  1. Brady should have been at the 1 all year. Not strong with the ball? I don't agree with this at all. He was the best point guard on the team. He has tremendous leadership, a knack for getting to the rim, keeping his teammates involved and ran the team extremely well from the point.

I thought the two biggest plays of the game were.... one was mentioned earlier in this thread, when NCC had a chance for a break away layup and Ryan collided Hightchew which knocked the ball lose when they were the only two players on that half of the court for the steal and layup.

The other big play, which I am surprised hasn't been brought up as of yet was the defense that Miller played on McQuery. Miller held him to 5 points in the first half and then in the 4th quarter, NCC took Miller out and McQuery scored 7 straight points for Rebels on threee consecutive trips down the court before NCC put Miller back in to play defense against him. I don't know why Brannen feels he has to take Miller out at the same points of the game each game, however, I really thought it cost the Breds not having Miller blanket McQuery the entire game. While Miller was out, McQuery scored on a put back, a three and hit two free throws that put the Rebels up for good during the 4th quarter.

As for McDonald, the young man played like he did the first 3 weeks of the season yesterday. It seems as though NCC forgot about him during the middle part of the season (outside of the injury). Again, it seemed as though we had to wait until 3:30 left in the quarter before he came in. I struggle with the substitution pattern with NCC. I wouldn't have taken McDonald out yesterday at all unless he raised his hand stating he was tired.

Anyone have stats for the game?

  2. I haven't watched enough of all the teams to see who is deserving or not but I do like the fact that coaches can't vote on their own so at least that is a little less biased. I do wonder though how you pick an Academic winner, regardless of who wins. Do other coaches know what another kids grades are from another school? Just curious.

Is every kid eligible or does each coach nominate a certain number from their team?

  3. Difference in the game was NCC made 7 treys and Highlands only 2. There is your 5 point difference as both teams had 17 total FG's and 8 FTs. Also, Beuter had zero turnovers.

NCC fans should be thankful for treys as They were 21 of your 49 points.

Schulte and McDonald aren't strong enough IMO to demand the ball but They don't even look at them which allows the defense to cut off Hightchew and Beuter penetration. The treys and Siebert shooting off screens is what won the game.

I disagree. IMO, like stated by others, if NCC would be more selective and take better shoots (not the first 3-point shot) this game is not close. NCC allowed Highlands to hang around. If Towells had any help, the outcome would have been different.

NCC needs to transition more and not let the other team setup their defense. This team is much better when they are getting to the middle of the lane looking to dump it off to their bigs for easy baskets. It also allows them to crash the offensive boards for easy stick backs. There are not many teams that have their length (Schulte, McDonald, Seibert).

NCC has the potential to win the region, however they need to make some adjustment and go back to their strengths.

  4. Did Bolden play jv? If so how did Bolden and the Pangallo kid do against each other.

IMO Pangallo definitely got the better of Bolden. I don't believe Bolden guarded Pangallo in the second half due to foul trouble. Pangallo did a great job handling the ball and leading his team. I would be interested in seeing the box score. I would guess Pangallo had 15-18 pts and Bolden maybe 4-6. These two will be fun to watch for three more years. Both are extremely quick.

  5. I was not at the game. For whatever it is worth, to support your analysis, Walter, MacDonald had 17 points in the first match-up and 4 points last night. Not getting the ball to him? :idunno:

Macdonald might not have had as many points as the first game, however he did a pretty nice job defensively against Campbell. According to the box score Campbell had 6, well below his average. Campbell was a difference maker on the defensive end blocking and altering shoots.

The young man battled hard and has nothing to hang his head about.

  6. Highlands 7th grade wins the Dayton Holiday Tourney with a victory over Beechwood by a score of 49-40. Well played game by both sides and each program has a lot to look forward to in the future if these kids continue to develop and most importantly continue to play the game of basketball.

    Who won the 8th grade?
