  1. When the tourney is at Mason the total attendence is has been between 11 to 12 thousand with the lowest being 8800. It cannot be held at other places other than the gyms holding it now. At Montgomery in 2008 attendence was 9584 and 2012 attendence was 4849. At BOK in 2009 attendence was 11183. The participating schools recieved the lowest payout since 2000. The tourney has made enough money to pay non-participating in in every year except 03, 07, 08, 19 and 2012. The tourney has never made enough money to pay non-participating schools when played somewhere other than Mason and two years Mason never even made enough.

Based on this logic then we should move the sweet 16 from Rupp. It clearly has higher operating costs thus resulting in lower payouts to the KHSAA. Bottom line, kids love playing in these college arenas and thats where they should be if they have the opportunity. Kids still talk about playing at BOK in 2009. The Fieldhouse, Henry County and several others have really passed their prime. Ask any major sports franchise and they would love to get rid of their old facilities. Players want to be in the newer facilities as well.

  2. That referee did plenty to embarrass himself. He was flat out awful.

I know of two instances where one of the officials called a foul but gave it to a kid that was no where near the play. I mean somewhere like 15' away. A tremendous amount of phantom fouls in the 4th quarter. Literally no contact just simply a kid dribbling up the floor and the official would call a foul. All of the kids were throwing their palms up and somewhat laughing. It really degraded to that point. I would really love for the KHSAA or regional head official to borrow and watch the game film of this game. There would be some serious explaining to do.

Awful game to watch. Every trip resulted in a foul and free throws. I'm not sure what Scott shot from the charity stripe but if they hit any free throws the game is easily over mid-way thru the 4th. I give both teams credit for trying to play thru the officiating. It was a battle of strong wills in the 4th quarter. I would like to think there is a lesson in here somewhere for the kids but I'm a little at a loss of trying to spin this one.

  3. I also believe the rule should be changed. Slapping the backboard should be basket interference if it effects the ball going in the basket.

For now, it is what it is.

I believe the rule is good as it is currently written. If you have ever played and been able to block shots then you know that from time to time you inadvertantly hit the back board. I think it would be a travesty if you called basket interference or anything if someone touches the glass. Especially knowing that smacking the backboard impacts a very small percentage of shots.

  4. I get it. You would be right if ONE official called both. However, when you have two signaling at the same time how do you decide who gets to make the call?

I would think proximity and positioning of the officials would be the overriding factor. I watch A LOT of game film and often see officials out of position and are baited into a call (see Ruthsatz head bobs) lol... But often wonder why all three officials are ball watching vs watching their area of responsibility. I guess one of lifes great mysteries ; )

  5. Simple. You have two officials with two different angles. Since it's a subjective call you can't tell one he didn't see it correctly. So, by rule, it's a foul on both players.

What happens next depends on where the ball was when the double foul/blarge happened. If one team had the ball (ie shot not int he air) then that team retains the ball. If the ball was released prior to the double foul then it goes to the arrow.

Thanks Clyde, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around how a charge and block are called on the same play. I can see in many other instances but these two things just seem contradictory

  6. Agreed on it being unfortunate. I've sat in meetings where officials said it's also basket interference even though the rule does not support that.

Clyde, I have a rules question not relating to smacking the backboard, but rather the double foul and second block charge during the Scott / CCH game. How can you have a double foul when one referee is signaling charge while the other is signaling block? I'm not sure how one play can produce a block and a charge. That one has me scratching my head.

The second call came later when the referee's repeated themselves by signaling block and charge. But this time the referee signaling block, and basket good simply just walked away and allowed the other official call the charge.

I know there can be a double foul but in these instances I don't believe a double fould can or should be called. Can you clarify this one for me?

  7. I did not imply that at all. I'm a big, no, huge BH fan. I stated what I did in response to others implying that our other players are unable, or afraid to "step up." Our players know their roles and are just fine with them. There's just a lot of BS being said in this thread. We have a good (young) team. I just saw that Bishop Brossart only beat Augusta by 10. Well, our "bumbling, fumbling" other players beat them with BH on the bench for the whole game because of injury. I didn't diss BH. Go back and read all my posts before making an ignorant assumption.[/

I am probably about as impartial as you can get. YOUR quote def. implies that you play better without brandon. If the TEAM is ok with their roles then why does this thread even exist? Your comment that you beat Augusta who just lost to Bishop Brossart by 10 means????? Explains a whole lot about the comments being thrown around....

Anyway, I don't think the rest of the team is bumbling and funbling at all.... sorry you feel that way but I think they are better than you are giving them credit.

Lastly, not sure I ever said you dissed Brandon. Go back and read my posts.

I think I've gotten dumber for reading this whole thing. :idunno:

  8. Dixie's 4 Sophs and Daria (JR) outscored SC in the 4th with Hatton on the bench. SC had 3 starters and 2 guys from their main rotation in the game during that time. I don't think "other guys" are afraid, or unable to step up.

I don't have a dog I this race but you are implying that you are better off or can be better off without Brandon. Think about that..... Brandon is one of the best players to ever wear the colonel uniform. I've watched dixie at least 6 times this year in person and twice on tape. There is not one kid on that team anywhere near his level. Without him you are really struggling. I'm not slamming the other kids I'm just stating the obvious. Every player at some point has to figure their role out to help his team. It seems dixie parents want there kid to be the main guy and that just should not happen. Brandon is not selfish At all. Very efficient but not selfish. The kid should touch the ball on nearly every possession. Then I thi k the others would score more due to the attention Brandon would draw. Isn't this what this is about. Getting more shots for Johnny?

  9. All I can say is if Holmes shoots the 3 ball like they did in the first half of their first matchup then not sure many teams can beat Holmes. Walter what do they shoot behind the arc for the year vs the first half of their first game?

I'm a little concerned that the refs will impact the game too much this go around. Hopefully they will let them play and the players decide on the floor. The first matchup was hard to watch as it seemed to be above that particular crews abilities.

Not sure how anyone can pick Scott over Holmes given their success. However I have no doubt Scott can beat them. I don't see it being impossie at all. Holmes better be hot and stroke it again. The pressure is all on them.

  10. Just trying to make a point and not state exact facts. If you want facts Mason had hosted the Tourney 44 of the last 48 years. Exceptions are 1969, 2008, 2009 and 2012. Has Mason made mistakes hosting, sure who hasn't, but ask anyone that the 10 Regional tourney is the best of them all at the Fieldhouse.

Well you got me thinking. I have been to regional tournaments in the 7th,8th, 9th, 10th, 11th,12th and 13th over the years.... giving my age away. I can honestly say the the 10th is the only one that I recall seeing the students placed right behind the opposing teams bench. I can also say that each atmosphere is fantastic. That is what makes kentucky basketball what it is. The regionals played in the nicer college arenas are pretty unique and the kids love them. The arena in Corbin is very nice, Morehead, Bellmont and BOK. They are probably the better venues. The fieldhouse and Henry County are unique that they are old large gyms but if I was a kid I would much rather play in one of the nicer larger venues. As I think most kids really do.

  11. I will stay true to form and say that while it is better that there were no student sections behind the opponent's bench, I am disappointed that Montgomery did not sit on the visitor bench and use visitor uniforms if that is the spot they drew. However, I will say that early in the the year...(at the first Clark Co game) the new AD decided to move Montgomery's home bench. If you look at the scorer's table, the home bench was to the left... on the bench closest to the end zone bleachers. For the tournament, that should be the home bench for whoever draws that spot. If it didn't happen that way, I think it is wrong.

Can I ask why it matters which side the home team sits? That's an honest question. The whole point about the Fieldhouse is that Mason places their students right behind the home teams bench. I really don't think it matters where they sit as long as its not right behind the opposing teams bench. I think that is an advatange and in poor taste for a Regional. I haven't seen that occur in other Regional tournaments.

  12. It seemed like we wanted two kids to be in control of our destiny. One finishes well, not 1 on 5 though. And the other over penetrates and forces something terrible. We have more weapons than that. Like a coach told me last night during the first half. Stack the middle against your big and let the other short PG attack. He will shoot you out of game's . Also felt that they could attack him offensively away from ball as he often is watching the ball. Basically... he was wondering the same thing because he has a lot of respect for our staff. Quote" Scott's easy to scout".
