For many of you who are from the Northern Kentucky area you might know who Woody Johnson is. He was an umpire and helped with the Red Devils. For the past year and a half (roughly) he has battled cancer. Woody lost his fight with cancer tonight. It is a huge lost to the Campbell County football program as the past 3 or 4 years. He had a huge impact on every single person he met. I do not think he ever said anything.

Please say a prayer for the Johnson family.

May you rest in Peace Woody Johnson, you will be greatly missed.

Just to add that his son, Buzzy, was a standout performer for the Camels. Sorry to hear about this news. RIP

Woody Johnson, a former St. Joe Bluejay and Red Devil Football player, long before his notable career as an umpire, youth and high school football coach, succumbed to his long, valiant battle with cancer Wednesday night at University Hospital.

Johnson was a player out of the Jon Lloyd-Nick Ziegler mold and had a sterling career with the Campbell County Red Devils long ago, during my former life as one of the organization's directors. Woody was one of my boys. Maybe that's why the fact that he is 49 years old and father of five seems so impossible.

Woody gave back to that organization serving as a Red Devils coach for 17 years, before becoming an asssistant coach at Campbell County High School. He worked many years as a high school baseball umpire, where he served as the president of the Northern Kentucky

Umpires Association, and where he earned the honor of being inducted into the association's Hall of Fame. Woody is also a proud member of the Youth Football Hall of Fame.

The last time I remember talking to Woody was through the wire mesch of the backstop at St. Mary Field between innings of a Brossart baseball game.

He was a brick and stone mason by trade, and an Army veteran.

He was extremely popular in youth and high school sports circles. His visitation will take place on Monday, April 5th from 4pm to 9pm at the Campbell County Middle School - nuff said!

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am Tuesday, April 6th at St. Joseph, Cold Spring. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery.

The photo is rather formal for Woody who was much more comfortable in a well-broken in sweatshirt and ballcap.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Johnson of Alexandria; sons, Adam and Austin Johnson of Alexandria, daughters Nikki Taylor of Louisville, Stephanie and Cassie Johnson, both of Alexandria, and sister, Nancy Lagedrost of Alexandria.

I have heard nothing but great things about Woody and its really sad because nothing was said at the school and nothing was on the website at all. There probably was not a bigger supporter of the Camels nor will there be. He was a great man and my prayers are with his family.

I really do not understand why something needs to be said at the high school. Not everyone knew Woody and I do not remember ever a death being announced or posted on the main page of the school's website. However, it was posted on the Campbell County Football website

I first met woody in 1973 when he played football for the seniors red devils. He came to us as a eyes wide open kid with a huge smile and a twice the heart. His infectious attitude was contagious to all that played with him and coached him.I think our team record was average at best. The very next year was the first year the nkyfl held its first super bowl at newport high school. We were very sucessful in 1974 with woody playing a huge role as a running back and nose guard. We defeated avery good newport firefighter team who had beaten us earlier in the year.Woody moved on to CCHS where he played for the legendary coached Bob Miller and ran track under long time

sucessful coach Allan Arhman.Woody met and fell in love with his future wife Colleen. After graduation and a few years later Woody served his country in the US.ARMYsignal corp.As luck wood have it our paths cross again in1990 as he and i started coaching together with the senior red devils. The countless hours that Woody gave back to the red devil org. and campbell co, high school can never be repaid. His payment was the love and respect his players had for him.His legacy will be on the base ball diamonds with the umpires he mentored and on the football fields where he coached hundreds of kids .His spirit will always live because of you who where lucky enough to be coached my him and will pass that passion on to your children. We loved you woody you were the best.
