gchs_uk9 Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Garrard County and Anderson County open the season at Dyehouse Stadium in Lancaster on Friday, August 21. This will be the 21st meeting between the two schools, but first since 1983. This game will also be only the second home-opener for Garrard County in the last sixteen years. Both teams look to be improved off of last year's campaigns. Anderson County finished last year at 7-5, losing 49-41 to Doss in the regional semifinals. Garrard County closed last season at 4-7, losing 28-13 at Breathitt County in the first round of the playoffs. Anderson County looks to be the favorite in Class 5A, District 4, along with Oldham County. They return starting quarterback Jacob Russell who threw for over 1,600 yards and 20 scores last year, while rushing for over 300 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Bearcats figure to be strong on the offensive line and also hope to improve on a defense that gave up 25 points per game last year. Garrard County has earned a bit of buzz in the offseason and hopes to challenge Somerset for the district championship, along with Wayne County and Taylor County. The Lions return do-it-all receiver Tyler Ray, who ran for over 350 yards last year and had over 700 yards receiving. Ray led the Lions with 15 touchdowns. Along with Ray the Lions return running back Fred Hayes (584 yards, 5 TDs), wide receiver Zach Hounshell (425 yards, 6 TDs), and several others who will need to step up for the offense to score like last year, when it averaged almost 31 points per game. This should be an interesting season opener. I suspect Anderson County will be the favorite, but I believe it should be a very good ballgame. Look for offensive fireworks from both sides. Whichever defense tightens and stops the other will come away the winners. Historical Preview *This marks the 21st meeting between the schools *The all-time series is tied 10-10 *This will be the 11th matchup in Lancaster, where Anderson County holds a 6-4 advantage *Anderson County won the last meeting in Lancaster, 17-7 in 1982. CoachBuckett Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Peach and Company roll. Garrad County don't have the horses yet. ACHS - 35 GCHS - 14
LCPATS Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Anderson shouldn't have much trouble in this one. I expect Garrard to be better this year, but not good enough to challenge Anderson County. They are a very impressive team. I saw Anderson scrimmage LC, and they had there way with Lincoln. Not that LC is a great team or anything, but Anderson really destroyed them. And I would say GC and LC are pretty similar squads.
gchs_uk9 Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 Not a lot of talk about this one. Are there any Anderson County fans on BGP? Yesterday's Herald-Leader preseason poll had Anderson County #8 in 5A. I'd say that's about right. It also had Garrard County #10 in 3A. That definitely caught me by surprise. I think there is potential for this team to end up somewhere around that spot, but breaking in a new quarterback on opening night against a really good club like Anderson will make it a challenge.
AverageJoesGym Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Very detailed information as usual GCHS. I think the Lions will be improved this year but I think Anderson is a tough opener, even at home. I'll take Anderson County 35-20.

Of the four non-district games before the district games start, this is definitely the toughest. I think Garrard will have a good shot to beat Rowan, West Jessamine and Estill. By the way, Joe, looking forward to the Garrard/Somerset game this year. The gap closed a little last year and hopefully we can close it up this year.
Linebacker1 Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Bearcats roll in this one. Jacob Russell and company too much for the Lions.
BigCatDaddy Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Will Anderson play down to the competition? I take the bearcats by 14.
