Ram Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 What does Western Hills need to do to improve in 2009? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.
Osceola5454 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Western Hills had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2008, and lost only 4 seniors from that team. The offense will start with QB Dylan Curry (6'6" 255 lbs) who passed for over 1500 yards and 10 TDs last season. Also returning is WH leading rusher Justin Wright (5'11" 200 lbs with 611 yards and 7 TDs) and 4 starters off of the offensive line. WH must replace 3 of its top receivers, but does have experienced young talent coming up. The defense returns 8 starters led by LB Arie Slone (6'2" 205 lbs with 116 tackles in 2008) and Wright. The defensive front returns almost intact. Hills must replace 2 defensive backs, but the top 4 reserves from last season returns. Hills made a huge leap forward last season, and should contend for its first ever district and regional championships. Another important factor is the increase in numbers. There has been between 30-35 at Spring practices, with another 10-15 expected after other Spring sports. Also have a class of 20+ freshmen expected. With continued commitment in the weight room and running program; this should be a deep, experienced, and senior lead team.
Rasputin Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 The QB at Hills could be the difference maker. If he has a good year, then they could go far in the playoffs.
retired Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Best of luck to Coach Miller and the Western Hills Football Family....Remember that these predictions are based on numbers...We as Coaches and Players must act to make them a REALITY....
ColonelMike Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I don't live in Franklin County, nor am I a WH fan, student, or alum...but I'm thrilled the Wolverines are finally "putting the pieces together" in the football program. It's been a long time coming. For years, WH has struggled in football, and every program deserves its time in the sun...long overdue for the Wolverines. Of course, I'll have to root against you guys when you play one of my three Oldham schools (North), but otherwise - best of luck, WH! Lady Fortune owes you!! :thumb:
Osceola5454 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 As retired mentioned; how well WH does in 2009 will also depend upon continued effort, work ethic, and heart. The pieces are there to have a great season and expectations will be much higher, but the kids can not start to read too many press clippings! A good sign is the number of players attending off-season weight lifiting and conditioning. Many more players in attendance, and strength/speed numbers are better. This senior class took their lumps as Soph, now is their time to mature and have success. ColonelMike, we look forward to hosting North Oldham this year and trying to duplicate their success in 2008!!
3wishes Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Can any WH fans tell me what Western Hills Helmet looked like in 1995, it is for a helmet project. Thanks.
MLB50 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Curry probably is 6'5" or 6'6" but 255 is really stretching it. He's probably closer to 225. Any how, he's a BIG quarterback for high school. He has great leadership skills and will do whatever it takes to win. However, he has been fortunate to play on both sides of the football and be injury free over the past 2 seasons. Especially, considering he plays on the defensive line. It is extremely dangerous for a quarterback to play defensive end. One crackback block against a dirty opponent could be the end of his season and considering he has committed to UofL, he shouldn't be playing defensive end. It's one of the most dangerous positions in football. As for Hills, don't get too excited. They will be about the same as last year. They lost 4 kids from last season that anchored the skill positions. Curry will NOT have the homerun threats that he had last year. Also, the secondary will be a huge question mark. I understand that they only lost 4 players but take a look at the stats from last season and you will see that they lost most of the play makers. Unless some of the younger kids can fill that spot, they won't be any better than last year. However, there schedule is fairly weak. The best team on their schedule is probably Frankfort High, who will have a legitimate shot at Class A Championship if they can throw the football by the time they face Beechwood.
jvdfc Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Did the Polsgrove kid have some kind of injury that may hold him out for the year? I sure hope not. He is a tough kid who was going to get a lot of playing time coming into this year. I hope it was just bad info.
Osceola5454 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Hills did lose 4 VERY important players to graduation, but they should be an improved team this season. They have four linemen returning that should give Curry more time in the pocket and open bigger holes in the running game. Wright returns at FB giving Hills a good inside running attack. The loss of Reed (WR) and Lee (TE) do hurt, but Hills has more weapons this season if they develop. Chris Pugh (WR) is almost a Reed clone and Bobby Clay (WR) has state title track speed (must develop consistency). At TE Arie Slone is a better blocker and reciver than Lee. On defense the starting front four return almost intact and the LB corp will be a team strength. Slone had over 100 tackles as a Soph last season and played the entire season in a cast, while Wright can play inside the box or on a slot reciever. Curry will play a strong saftey role this year, while Pugh started at DB. Must do better against the pass, but a strong front seven will help the secondary. In regard to the schedule, this is the first mention I have seen of anyone say Hills plays a weak schedule! For a school with little football tradition, Hills plays a difficult schedule. This season they have two 5A teams (Grant and Woodford County), three 4A teams (Franklin County, East and West Jessamine) as well as Frankfort High and Washington County (one of the top scoring teams in the state in 2008) - along with the district schedule. While not playing Trinity or St. X, still a difficult 3A schedule. Hills has no reason at this point to be overconfident, but there are plenty of reasons for excitment and expectations for this season.
