Ram Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Teams and Score: CovCath 29 Highlands 27 Year: 2006 RS or PO: Last game of regular season Location: Highlands Details why this game should be the "Game of the Week": This is the game of the week because it was the last game of the season to decide who would be the number 1 seed in their division. It was a hard fought game, with wet and raining conditions. With 51 seconds left Highlands took the lead 27-23. CovCath received the squib kick, and drove down the field and go the the 2 yard line with 7 seconds left. The missed on their next pass setting up the last play of the game. With 3 seconds left Josh Bleser threw a pass into the corner of the end zone where Bovard caught it with no time on the clock, breaking the streak of losses to Highlands.

PennStation's Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Enough said. Dale is a good coach but he made a very bad decision.
Commander 25 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Enough said. Dale is a good coach but he made a very bad decision. He made up for it by winning the state title a few weeks later.:thumb:
PennStation's Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I agree. It happpens I am sure he wanted it back right away. I wouldn't trade him for many people. I will take all our state titles.
THUNDERBIRDS Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 He made up for it by winning the state title a few weeks later.:thumb: Uhhhh no he didn't. We lost to CovCath a few weeks later over at CovCath. Wrong year....

leatherneck Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Enough said. Dale is a good coach but he made a very bad decision. I'm not even sure that Dale made that call, as he is not in charge of special teams. Perhaps he did however. Not sure why they did the squib kick throughout the game. I'd heard that D Bathiany had an injured foot that week, but don't know if that was true. Perhaps they were concerned about CovCath's return guys (Castanada and Brown) being exceptional returners (didn't we often wonder on here why teams kicked the ball to Collinsworth this year?). No denying that the squib kicks gave CovCath great field position that entire game and with Popham's leg, the squib kicks helped CovCath score pretty many points in that game. No doubt about that. I've watched that tape probably more than anyone (with perhaps the exception of Family Tradition....misery loves company I guess) and while field position no doubt helped CovCath score on the last drive, there were other "contributing factors". The pass that Bleser through on that final play couldn't have been thrown any better. The pros don't complete that pass with any regularity and CovCath had failed on a couple of prior attempts in the game to complete that pass. But on that play, it was the perfect route and perfect pass. And I have to add, perfect defense too. The ball was just in the one spot that our defensive back could not break it up. I think, but of course cannot know, that if we win that game, we beat CovCath in the playoffs as the game would have been at Highlands and the monkey would have gotten even heavier. What I'm not confident of however is whether we could have beaten LexCath the following week. Our D just did not matchup nearly as well against LexCath's O as CovCath's did and CovCath struggled mightily to beat LexCath in that game in a shoot out. One can never know however what would have happened if we'd have matched up against LexCath, just like one can never know what would have happened if we'd have kicked the ball deep instead of squib kicking it in the CovCath game. Who knows, perhaps Castanada or Brown would have returned a couple of deep kicks for touchdowns and CovCath wouldn't have needed a last play touchdown to beat us in the regular season game. For those who know me, you can appreciate why the games against CovCath in 06 still cause me "pain", although I now deal with it by thinking it just wasn't meant to be, nor were the losses to Elder, DeSales and St. X that year. Ram, what made that game special was the fact that Highlands had beaten CovCath quite a few times in a row, including the game in 05 when probably everyone other than Highlands fans felt that CovCath was a huge favorite. CovCath had a huge monkey on its back coming into the regular season game. Highlands had put together a long, grind it out drive to take the lead with less than a minute left in the game. Then CovCath gets the ball and on a huge play from about mid-field, Bleser eludes a sack by our best defensive lineman (who fought through a double team to be able to put pressure on Bleser), he scrambles to his right and forces our corner back to come up to contain him. Bleser then completes about a 30 yd pass to the receiver made open by the cornerback coming up to contain. On the second to last play, Bleser attempts to throw the ball to Peter Sutton over the middle in the endzone. An outside linebacker dives to knock the ball away and almost intercepts it, but the ball slips away. On the last play of the game, as time expires, CovCath completes a fade pass in the left coffin corner that requires Bovard to leap as high as he can, over the defensive back who is also leaping as high as he can and on Bovard's hip, to catch the ball for a touchdown. While the outcome still pains me, I have to admit it was another classic game between Highlands and CovCath and the kids on both teams left it all on the field. All one should reasonably ask for from kids.
Commander 25 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Cov. Cath won state in 2006.:idunno: You are right I am sorry wrong year.
cch5432 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 The players of the game were Bovard and Sutton. They dominated the HHS defensive backs all day. They were just too tall and too fast.
jbwill2 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Here's a question: what was the difference between this game (a two-point win by CCH at HHS on a last-second TD pass that had to be thrown perfectly, and was) and the playoff rematch a few weeks later (which CCH won by 10 points at CCH)? I seem to remember hearing that HHS didn't look nearly as sharp in the rematch as they did in the first game. Did home-field advantage play a serious role in how different these two games went, or did CCH gain a lot of confidence when they beat HHS during the regular season, allowing them to fully play to their potential (which was great, given the talent on that CCH squad)? I guess I'm wondering why the playoff rematch wasn't nearly as competitive as this game was?
jbwill2 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Also, what yard line did CCH begin on the final drive?
