Jumper_Dad
You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him. But I AM biased.
hardball
how do you stop John Cole? Pressure their quarterback or put a taller man on him (and pray he can keep up)...
MEDICINEMAN
We tried to contain him last year and could not. He caught 16 passes and was simply "great"...:thumb:
AverageJoesGym
If the quarterback has time to throw and Cole has time to run his routes he's going to get open and catch the ball, so the key is pressure on the quarterback and trying to keep him in front of you and get multiple people to the ball when he does get it. Its easier said than done.
Jumper_Dad
Pressure their quarterback or put a taller man on him (and pray he can keep up)...Danville did that last year and had some success containing him in the second half with a much taller kid and sellout pressure thrown at Deaton. EKUAlum05
how do you stop John Cole? By stopping the inexperienced QB who has to get the ball to him! PRESSURE, PRESSURE, and MORE PRESSURE. Cole will kill you even if you play zone, so you might as well go man and disrupt the QB's timing and force the deep ball to be inaccurate, and the passes to be shorter where Cole ahs to beat you by breaking tackles. Jeepman
Ball control by your own offense. When they do have the ball I would have a Line Backer all over the QB every time he even looks like he is going to drop back. Then when they start picking that up a corner back will be all over the QB.
Cynical
Don't let him behind you and most importantly, dont kick him the ball!!
cshs81
IMO teams should press the receiver at the LOS more often than they do. Be physical at the line and allow the D-line to get pressure while throwing a receiver off of their intended route.
Freebird23
Are we going to get a chance to see Cole in N Ky prior to the playoffs?
All Play No Work
how do you stop John Cole? Well you don't because even if he is covered he still catches the ball. What you can do was mentioned as in put pressure on the QB, kick wisely etc. The real question might be if you are Somerset, "How do you get the ball in his hands as much as last year with a new QB." This kid is the real deal, but with a young QB having Cole at WR could be a difficult situation for the Jumpers. Ross Deaton was a great QB, overshadowed by Cole's production. But WR/QBs go hand-in-hand, and unless Somerset has someone in the grooming to replace Deatonour friend John Cole may have an less than par year. All that said, he is more than likely the best athlete/football player in EKY.
Jumper_Dad
QB is a senior that had a lot of varsity snaps two years ago. He got a couple of series early on in every game. He may be rusty but he is not young or inexperienced.

Dixie did this last year a few times in their game against Campbell County. When they put a physcial corner on Griffen at the LOS and a safety about 15 yards back, they were able to contain him as their line was able to get pressure on the QB. However, when they put the corner 10 yards off the LOS, Griffen ate them up for a couple TDs.
