DevilMayCare
Round 1 Headlines • Johnson Walks The Scotties • Bailey Bombs 💣 The Maroons • Silence Is Deafening In Corbin First Team All-Watchlist Jarren Johnson (Union County, QB) A stocky, tazmanian devil of a runner, assailing you with power, speed, and determination in equal measure. When Glasgow stopped his momentum dead, he summoned a second wind to twist and turn over the goal line. Johnson ran roughshod over the Scotties, featuring one run in particular that saw as many as 8-9 would-be tacklers get a hand or two on him, but unable to bring him down until 40 yards were behind them. Forty may also number the broken tackles he accrued throughout the night, as Glasgow lunged, swatted, and bear hugged, often to no avail. He amassed 323 yards of offense, 241 of which were gained doing what he does best, taking matters into his own hands, or more appropriately, feet. Those feet have covered almost 4,000 yards the last two seasons. We saw a singular force of nature power his team to the 3A finals last year… is a similar narrative being written for Johnson? Season to date: 160 carries for 1,848 and 34 TDs | 403 passing yards and 4 TDs | 31 tackles | 1 INT Highlights: vs. Glasgow Second Team All-Watchlist Deuce Bailey (Bowling Green, QB) Bailey looks the part of a four year starter, a seasoned vet who's seen it all. As you watch him flush from the pocket or stand tall with eyes downfield, you get the feeling you're seeing it happen in real time as he's dialing in with no intention of leaving Bowling Green without another state title. He abused Madisonville-North Hopkins for 308 yards of total offense and three touchdown passes on 19 of 24 attempts. His second quarter touchdown pass to Trevy Barber was a superman throw, as he rolled right and uncorked a frozen rope that covered 35 yards in a flash. The night was not without warts, as a couple of ambitious deep balls were picked off, sullying an otherwise splendid night. But those can be overlooked, the result of a quarterback brimming with confidence. Season to date: 163/242 for 2,585 yards and 37 TDs with 7 INTs | 271 rushing yards and 2 TDs Third Team All-Watchlist Kade Elam (Corbin, QB) The sound of silence can be heard every Friday night that Elam takes the field with the Redhounds. It's the sound made when he whips his right arm forward for a 25 yard completion made to look easier than it really was. It's the sound of the strides he makes as he tucks and runs. Of all the quarterbacks in this crop of seniors who litter the watchlist every week, Elam is the quiet one. James and Atwell are chasing and catching records. Bailey is throwing missiles in search of another state championship. Pennington is apparently allergic to turning the ball over. Hodge and Hayden play in the spotlight of Louisville and NKY, respectively. Elam is Bob Ross, minding his own business, painting a masterpiece in the corner. The latest stroke of his brush produced 286 yards and five touchdowns on 15/16 attempts as Corbin roasted Russell County. Season to date: 171/221 for 2,935 yards and 33 TDs with 3 INTs | 293 rushing yards and 10 TDs Honorable Mention Brady Atwell (Owensboro Catholic, QB) Atwell took a bigger cut at Crittenden County after being limited by an ankle injury the first time around, completing 15/18 passes for four touchdowns with 279 yards of offense. Season To Date: 180/264 for 2,659 yards and 38 TDs with 5 INTs | 435 rushing yards and 12 TDs Connor Hodge (Christian Academy of Louisville, ATH) Hodge misfired on one of six attempts for 217 yards and four touchdowns against Marion County, and his only run covered 39 yards for a fifth score. Season to date: 181/262 for 2,712 yards and 29 TDs and 8 INTs | 518 rushing yards and 10 TDs | 3 INTs Jack James (Paducah Tilghman, QB) He threw for nearly 200 yards and four touchdowns on 12 of 14 completions against Breckinridge County. James has now surpassed 13,000 career passing yards, with only Clay County's Zach Lewis ahead of him in the record books. Season to date: 242/350 for 3,253 yards and 47 TDs with 7 INTs | 5 rushing TDs Clay Hayden (Beechwood, QB) Hayden sunk the battleship of the once mighty Danville Admirals with three touchdown passes on 7 of 10 completions. Season to date: 128/190 for 2,126 yards with 38 TDs and 4 INTs Bryce Button (South Warren, QB) Button clipped Apollo's wings with a pair of touchdown passes and 193 yards on 14 of 17 attempts. Season to date: 120/178 for 1,715 yards and 24 TDs with 8 INTs | 6 rushing TDs Luke Pennington (Sayre, QB) Closing out a masterclass on marksmanship by our class of ‘25 quarterbacks, Pennington was a tidy 6/7 with four touchdowns against Fairview. He's closing in on a hundred touchdown passes since his last interception, currently sitting at 92. Season to date: 141/176 for 2,158 yards and 42 TDs with 0 INTs | 3 rushing TDs | 1 INT Zack McCoart (Johnson Central, RB) One of the great seasons in JC history rolled on last week with 204 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries against Grant County. Season to date: 185 carries for 2,221 yards and 31 TDs Cortez Stone (Central, RB) Stone met little resistance from Casey County, as four of his five carries reached the endzone and netted 122 yards. Season to date: 153 carries for 1,722 yards and 30 TDs | 2 passing TDs 1
DevilMayCare
The quarterbacks featured this week combined to complete 93 of 112 passes (83%) with 29 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. As I said above, both of those were on an overzealous Bailey as he was willing to risk it for the biscuit. All-around, this was another incredible week for this class of QBs.
