Ryle ranked over Simon Kenton is ridiculous!

Overall, I’m not a fan of common opponent comparisons unless it’s glaring.  In this case, both have wins over Conner, Great Crossing & Campbell Co. by similar margins.  It appears both teams are fairly even.  Best part is that Simon Kenton gets to prove you right this Friday….or prove you wrong. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They each have a common loss too.  SK took an absolute beat down by CCH, Ryle on the other hand made it a decent game.   Ryle should absolutely be ranked over SK.

That's true, but I'm always willing to forgive one game.  You could also argue that Simon Kenton played Beechwood very close and that same Beechwood team took CCH to the brink of defeat the next week, so maybe the SK loss to CCH was just an off game for them.  Again, it's why I'm not necessarily a big proponent of common opponents unless it's glaring.  I will say, as a whole, Ryle has played a more competitive schedule overall than SK even though Ryle's four losses this year have each been by 2+ scores.

I agree with you.  I'm just trolling MC44.  I'm not a big proponent of common opponents either.  It can give you a glimpse, but it generally doesn't tell the whole story.

🍀 After Round 1 of the KHSAA playoffs, the biggest ratings gains and losses of the season have come into play.

Trinity remains No. 1 overall and not much has changed in the Statewide Top 25. The real action begins from within the Classes, usually below the Top 10 threshold in each.

Last week there were two teams +/- five places; this week 21.

📈 Trending Up ~

Strength of Schedule

One of the benefits of Massey vs. CalPreps is the ability to sort by Cross tabs: SoS, teams alphabetically, etc.

🍺 Strength of Schedule: Danville? Dixie Heights? Hopkinsville? LaRue County? Hazard? Russellville? "What in the Wide, Wild World of Sports is a goin' on here?

On a chilly evening at the local watering hole, high school football fans will order their favorite beverage and hash out who are the better teams.

Inevitably, someone will say, "Well my team's undefeated, they're the best." The first rebuttal, oftentimes is, "Yeah, and who have they played?"

In the before times, an oldtimer would pull out a rolled up newspaper with the latest scores and schedules. Lively discussion would ensue, and the barkeep smiles, knowing that he's going to have a good night.

🗞️ >📱 Rolled up newspapers are rarely seen these days. Luckily we've got access to several online sources for data and shortcuts to some pretty good rating systems.

Some folks like CalPreps. I'm becoming more of a fan of the Massey Ratings, just for ease of use. Both have lots of data, but imo Massey is easier to navigate and sortable crosstabs are very helpful, e.g. Strength of Schedule.

masseyratings.com/hsf/ky/ratings

🤔 WOPR has divided the Professor's Ratings by class. Sometimes we'll hear, "What happened to 'Team X' this year, they just fell off the map?" Or, "How can  'Team Y' be ranked so high, they've got a losing record?" SoS of course plays a pretty big role in determining the answers. Whether some team's records reflect a "puffing the product" is a valid point too.

How who a team plays prepares them for the postseason is an interesting point too I think.

A weak District has an impact, and the imbalance of the number of teams within a District statewide plays a roll as well.

Whether a team has under/over- performed is open to debate.

🧐 Each Class below will include all teams playing in Round 2 this week. WOPR has included Top 10 teams that didn't advance (x). I think there are some good indicators as to why some teams records reflect that this season they've bitten off more than they could chew.

BGP, how do you judge the merits of SoS in ranking a team?

To what extent does it predict future performance?

Too much weight placed on who a team's opponents have played in the algorithm?

Does playing a superteam or two spike an Sos too much? Too little?

Bragging rights for losing to higher ranked team? Hmm...

Please be constructive.

(+?/-?) Disclaimer: SoS may get skewed as playoffs progress - teams playing better/lesser opponents as they advance. It's one way rating systems like CalPreps and Massey look so good after the golden balls are presented at Kroger Field - they're self fulfilling prophesies. My take is they'd look a bit different if stopped at the end of the regular season. Point in favor of RPI.
