2nd Region Week 12 Review

 

Lyon County sits alone at No. 1 in the rankings after beating University Heights last week. University Heights, which beat Lyon County in the Second Region All "A" Classic Tournament in January, closed the regular season at No. 2 after being tied with the Lyons atop the rankings through last week. There are no other changes to the rankings. The KABC named Henderson County's Gerard Thomas and Madisonville-North Hopkins' Tamarcus Eaves regional co-players of the year (the award goes to a senior) and tabbed University Heights' Melvin Brown coach of the year. As usual, there's plenty of Travis Perry news.

 

Regional Rankings:

 

1. Lyon County (25-5, 14-1 region, 6-0 5th District) The Lyons enjoyed a second straight 3-0 week, beating University Heights 81-61, Trinity (Whitesville) 75-55 and Dawson Springs 114-56 in the regular season finale. They closed with 11 wins in a row. Junior guard Travis Perry scored 139 points in the three games, including a season- and career-high 61 versus Dawson Springs with Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari in attendance. Kentucky offered Perry in June. The 61 points are the most in a game in Kentucky this season and also set a Lyon County single-game record as Perry inched closer to Kelly Coleman on the state's all-time scoring list. Teammate Brady Shoulders recorded a triple-double against Dawson Springs with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. Perry scored 43 against Trinity (Whitesville). He has 971 points this season. He scored 990 as a sophomore. With 4,159 career points, Perry needs 179 to break Coleman's 67-year-old mark of 4,337 at Wayland High. If Lyon County repeats as district and regional tournament champion, that would guarantee at least six more games for the Lyons, meaning Perry could break the record in the first round of the state tournament if he averages 30 points over those six games. He is averaging 32.4 ppg this season. The top-seeded Lyons play No. 4 host Livingston Central in the opening round of the 5th District tournament.

 

2. University Heights (19-10, 11-4, 3-1 8th): The Blazers ended the week 1-2, losing to Lyon County by 20 and Webster County by four in overtime, and beating Paducah Tilghman by three in OT. However, they won five of their final seven games. They have an earlier 10-point win against Lyon County. Have also beaten Henderson County by 12 and split two games vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins. The second-seeded Blazers play No. 3 Hopkinsville in the opening round of the district tournament at Christian County.

 

3. Henderson County (20-8, 7-2, 3-1 6th): The Colonels finished the week 1-1 with a win over Hancock County as Lacon McKinney scored 23 points. Beat Madisonville-North Hopkins by 21 in December. Have won eight of their last 10 games. Clinched a spot in the district final, awaiting the winner of No. 2 host Webster County vs. No. 3 seed Union County.

 

4. Madisonville-North Hopkins (20-9, 12-4, 6-0 7th): The Maroons went 1-1 with a win against Trigg County as Tamarcus Eaves and Tre Carney scored 16 points each. Have won six of eight games. They've also beaten Christian County, Hopkinsville and Webster County. The No. 1 seed Maroons play No. 4 Dawson Springs in the opener of the district tournament.

 

5. Christian County (16-12, 6-4, 5-1 8th): The Colonels went 1-1 including an 88-80 quadruple-overtime win at Paul Laurence Dunbar with 22 points and 16 rebounds from Darrell Bateman. They have beaten Hopkinsville twice and are 13-6 since the 3-6 start. The top-seeded Colonels play No. 4 seed Fort Campbell in the district tournament opener.

 

6. Hopkinsville (12-16, 5-6, 2-3 8th): The Tigers beat Muhlenberg County with 25 points from Dertaurius Leavell in their only game and won four of their last five. Beat Webster County by 10.

 

7. Webster County (16-11, 10-6, 2-2 6th): The Trojans finished the final week 2-1, beating Marshall County and surprising University Heights by four at home with 20 points from Evan Michalek. Won 10 of their last 13. Beat Hopkins County Central, Crittenden County and Trigg County. Play Union County in the district tournament opener.

 

8. Hopkins County Central (13-16, 8-7, 4-2 7th): The Storm went 0-2 ending the regular season on a four-game losing streak. Beat Trigg County, Union County and Livingston Central. They hold the No. 2 seed in the district tournament and play host to third-seeded Caldwell County in the opener.

 

9. Crittenden County (11-17, 6-8, 4-2 5th): The Rockets went 0-1 and closed on a six-game losing streak. Earned the No. 2 seed in the district tournament with a first-round date versus No. 3 Trigg County. Beat Trigg by 12 earlier in the season.

 

10. Trigg County (14-15, 7-8, 2-4 5th): The Wildcats were 1-2 the final week, beating Dawson Springs. Went 8-15 after the 6-0 start and beat Union County by two.

 

11. Union County (12-15, 9-7, 1-3 6th): The Braves ended a four-game losing streak and went 2-1. They have beaten Livingston Central, Dawson Springs and Caldwell County twice.

 

12. Livingston Central (5-21, 4-14, 0-6 5th): The Cardinals were 0-2 for the week and lost their final 13 games. Defeated Dawson Springs, Caldwell County and Fort Campbell before the slide. They are 4-13 vs. the region.

 

13. Dawson Springs (11-19, 6-12, 1-5 7th): The Panthers went 1-3 the final week. Beat Fort Campbell twice earlier in the season and split a pair of games against Caldwell County.

 

14. Caldwell County (6-21, 5-16, 1-5 7th): The Tigers went 1-2 for the week, beating Livingston Central for the second time in the finale. They also have beaten Fort Campbell but lost nine of their last 11 games.

 

15. Fort Campbell (4-20, 0-11, 0-5 8th): The Falcons finished the week 0-3 and mired in an eight-game losing streak.
