Ashland pulled away to beat Boyd County 72-54 on Tuesday, Jan. 11 in a 64th District game that served as another showdown between the two longtime rivals.

A look around the 16th Region follows. 

 

1. Ashland (13-4): The Tomcats notched back-to-back wins over Boyd County and Huntington (W.Va.), remaining the 16th Region frontrunner. Ashland's upcoming schedule includes games versus Russell and Bardstown. 

 

2. Boyd County (12-3): The Lions suffered the loss to Ashland but will be looking to bounce back against visiting Johnson Central on Monday, Jan. 17. Boyd County has additional upcoming games scheduled versus Greenup County and Raceland. 

 

3. Bath County (16-1): The Wildcats remain one of the 16th Region's top three boys; high school basketball teams. Last week, Bath County notched wins over non-region opponents Whitley County and Pendleton County. The Wildcats are scheduled to host Fleming County and Rowan County for upcoming 61st District games.

 

4. Fleming County (12-4): Reeling off three more wins, Fleming County defeated Bluegrass United, Rowan County and Augusta. The Panthers are slated to face Bath County, Bracken County and Burgin this week.

 

5. Russell (10-3): The Red Devils continued to win, claiming victories over Morgan County and Greenup County. Russell has a tough upcoming test with a game versus 16th Region leader Ashland. The Red Devils have an additional upcoming game scheduled versus Lewis County. 

 

6. West Carter (6-6): The Comets are back at the .500 mark after recording back-to-back wins over Menifee County and Elliott County in the 16th Region All "A" Classic. West Carter defeated Elliott County 52-46 to win its third straight 16th Region All "A" Classic title. The Comets' upcoming schedule includes games versus Rowan County, Elliott County and Menifee County. 

 

7. Elliott County (10-3): The Lions defeated Rose Hill Christian and Raceland during the 16th Region All "A" Classic before falling to West Carter. Following its runner-up finish in the 16th Region All "A" Classic, Elliott County is poised to face East Carter and West Carter during the week ahead. 

 

8. Rowan County (6-12): The Vikings remained in the loss column, dropping games to Fleming County and Campbell County. Rowan County has upcoming games scheduled versus West Carter, Bath County and Scott. 

 

9. Greenup County (6-9): The Musketeers lost games to East Carter and Russell after suffering a setback to Elliott County during the first week of the new year. Greenup County's upcoming schedule includes games versus Boyd County and Lewis County. 

 

10. Raceland (7-8): The Rams split a pair of games, defeating Spring Valley (W.Va.) before losing to Elliott County. Raceland's upcoming schedule includes games versus Lewis County, Boyd County and Morgan County. 

 

11. Menifee County (9-9): The Wildcats from Frenchburg won two of three games, notching wins over Fairview and Prestonsburg while suffering a loss to West Carter. Menifee County's upcoming schedule includes games versus Powell County, Owsley County and West Carter. 

 

12. Fairview (4-11): The Eagles suffered a seven-point loss to Menifee County in the 16th Region All "A" Classic. Fairview is slated to face Rose Hill Christian, East Carter and Teays Valley Christian (W.Va.) in the week ahead. 

 

13. Lewis County (3-12): The Lions continued to slide following losses to Robertson County and Pike County Central. Lewis County's upcoming schedule includes games against Raceland and Greenup County. 

 

14. East Carter (4-8): The Raiders reeled off three straight wins, defeating Greenup County, Morgan County and Rose Hill Christian. East Carter has upcoming games slated versus Elliott County and Fairview. 

 

15. Morgan County (2-12): The Cougars dropped back-to-back games to Russell and East Carter before defeating Rose Hill Christian 59-42. Morgan County has an upcoming game scheduled versus Raceland. 

 

16. Rose Hill Christian (1-16): The Royals continued to slide, dropping games to Elliott County, East Carter and Morgan County. Rose Hill Christian has upcoming games scheduled versus Fairview and Jenkins.
