Ashland and Bath County each hosted a holiday tournament and walked away with the tourney championships prior to 2021 ending. 
Following Week 5, a look at the 16th Region boys' basketball teams, including rankings, follows. 

1. Ashland (9-4): The Tomcats reeled off three wins to capture the Ashland Invitational title. Ashland claimed wins over Calloway County, Lincoln County and Elder (Cincinnati) during its tradition-rich holiday tournament. Ethan Sellars (18.8 ppg) and Colin Porter (17.4 ppg) continue to combine to lead the Tomcats. Ashland is poised to host Spring Valley (W.Va.), Pikeville and Highlands during the first week of the new year. 

2. Boyd County (11-2): The Lions lost two of three games in the Ashland Invitational. In between losses to Lincoln County and Pikeville, Boyd County beat Calloway County. Boyd County is scheduled to meet Fairview and Johnson Central in a pair of games during the first week of the new year. 

3. Bath County (12-1): Continuing to win, Bath County won its annual Dan Swartz Classic. The Wildcats reeled off wins over Jenkins, Elliott County and Ryle during their annual tournament. Bath County's upcoming schedule includes games versus Robertson County, Powell County and Rose Hill Christian. 

4. Fleming County (8-4): The Panthers dropped two of three games in the Mason County Invitational, falling to Collins and Perry County Central before claiming a win over Augusta. Fleming County is scheduled to host Menifee County and Ryle during the first week of the new year. 

5. Rowan County (5-9): The Vikings dropped two of three games in the Lexington Christian Academy-hosted Jim Rose Classic, defeating East Jessamine before falling to Lloyd Memorial and Garrard County. Rowan County is scheduled to face Pike County Central in the opening round of the 2A Sectional on Monday, Jan. 3. 

6. Russell (7-3): The Red Devils compiled a 7-3 record through their first 10 games in the 2021-22 season. Russell won two of three games in the Dan Swartz Classic, defeating West Carter and Powell County, following a loss to Estill County in the tournament's opening round. The Red Devils have upcoming games scheduled versus East Carter and Lewis County. 

7. Elliott County (7-2): The Lions also won two of three games in the Dan Swartz Classic, defeating both Powell County and Estill County. However, tournament host Bath County dealt Elliott County a loss in the event. Elliott County's upcoming schedule includes games versus Greenup County, St. Patrick and Rose Hill Christian. 

8. West Carter (3-6): The Comets worked themselves back into the win column in Week 5. Following back-to-back losses to Ryle and Russell, West Carter defeated Jenkins. West Carter's upcoming schedule features games versus Morgan County and East Carter.

9. Greenup County (6-6): The Musketeers, following back-to-back losses to Portland (Tenn.) and Gordonsville (Tenn.), defeated Macon County (Tenn.). The week ahead has Greenup County set to face Elliott County, Morgan County and Floyd Central. 

10. Raceland (5-6): The Rams claimed back-to-back wins, defeating South Gallia (Ohio) and East Carter. Raceland has upcoming games slated against Rose Hill Christian and Simon Kenton. 

11. Fairview (4-10): The Eagles split a pair of games, defeating St. Joseph Central (W.Va.) before falling to Dawson-Bryant (Ohio). Fairview has upcoming games scheduled versus Boyd County and Menifee County. The Eagles are due to face Menifee County in the opening round of the 16th Region All "A" Classic. 

12. Lewis County (3-9): The Lions also split a game of games, defeating Pendleton County before falling to Thomas Nelson. Lewis County's upcoming schedule for the week ahead includes a game versus Russell. 

13. East Carter (1-7): Notching its first win in the 2021-22 season, East Carter defeated Rose Hill Christian 52-37 on Tuesday, Dec. 28. However, East Carter dropped a game to Raceland three days later. The Raiders have upcoming games scheduled versus Russell and rival West Carter. 

14. Menifee County (6-8): Showing improvement, Menifee County won three of four games in the Chain Rock Classic, notching wins over Phelps, Burgin and Middlesboro. The Wildcats dropped a game to host Pineville in the holiday tournament. Menifee County has upcoming games scheduled versus Morgan County, Fleming County and Fairview. 

15. Morgan County (1-8): The Cougars haven't played since Tuesday, Dec. 21. Morgan County has upcoming games scheduled against Menifee County, West Carter and Greenup County. 

16. Rose Hill Christian (1-11): The Royals remained in the loss column, dropping back-to-back games to East Carter and St. Joseph Central (W.Va.). Set for a busy week, Rose Hill Christian has upcoming games scheduled versus Raceland, Teays Valley Christian (W.Va.), Bath County and Elliott County.
