Rivals Ashland and Boyd County remain 1-2 in the BluegrassPreps.com 16th Region Boys' Basketball Rankings. 
A look around the 16th Region teams through the third week of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season follows. 
 
1. Ashland (5-3): The Tomcats are currently competing in the King of the Bluegrass tournament in Louisville. After defeating Fairview, Ashland knocked off Region 2 title contender Lyon County in the opening round of the King of the Bluegrass. However, perennial Region 7 title contender Male managed to outlast the Tomcats 69-66 in the second round of the King of the Bluegrass. 
 
2. Boyd County (8-0): Remaining unbeaten, Boyd County claimed wins over Lewis County, Knox Central and Henderson County in Week 3. The Lions are scheduled to face Rose Hill Christian and Ironton (Ohio) in back-to-back games in Week 4 of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. 
 
3. Bath County (6-1): The Wildcats reeled off back-to-back 61st District wins in Week 3, outlasting Fleming County in overtime then beating Menifee County. Bath County is currently on a five-game winning streak. The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the Smokey Mountain Christmas Classic Monday, Dec. 20-Wednesday, Dec. 22. 
 
4. Fleming County (7-2): The Panthers dropped a 61st District game to Bath County before defeating Henderson County and Buckhorn in Week 3. Fleming County suffered an overtime loss to much-improved Bath County. The Panthers aren't due back on the court for a game until the opening round of the Mason County Invitational Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 28. 
 
5. Rowan County (4-4): The Vikings won two of three games during the third week of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season, defeating Menifee County and Estill County. Rowan County dropped a game to Whitley County in Week 3 but showed improvement. The Vikings are slated to face host South Laurel in the opening round of Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge on Tuesday, Dec. 21. 
 
6. Russell (3-2): Remaining in the win column during Week 3, Russell recorded wins over West Carter and St. Patrick. The Red Devils are scheduled to compete in the Derby Classic at Raceland High School Monday, Dec. 20-Wednesday, Dec. 22. 
 
7. Elliott County (5-1): Heading into the fourth week of the 2021-22 season, Elliott County is on a five-game winning streak. Elliott County notched wins over Morgan County and Ironton (Ohio) in Week 3. The Lions are scheduled to compete in the Cavalier Classic at Jenkins on Tuesday, Dec. 21. 
 
8. West Carter (2-3): The Comets are 2-3 through their first five games in the 2021-22 season after picking up a win over Pendleton County in Week 3. However, West Carter dropped games to Russell and Rockcastle County during the third week of the 2021-22 season. West Carter is scheduled to visit Magoffin County on Tuesday, Dec. 21. 
 
9. Greenup County (5-4): The Musketeers continued to win in Week 3, claiming victories over East Carter, Raceland and South Point (Ohio). Greenup County carried a 5-4 record into Week 4. The Musketeers are off until the South Central Bank Halton Classic tops off at Allen County-Scottsville on Tuesday, Dec. 28. 
 
10. Raceland (3-2): The Rams dropped a pair of games in Week 3, falling to reigning 15th Region champion Paintsville and rival Greenup County. Raceland was limited in back-to-back outings after winning three of its first five games in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. The Rams are poised to host the Derby Classic in Week 4, opening the annual holiday event versus longtime rival Russell on Monday, Dec. 20. 
 
11. Fairview (2-4): The Eagles won one of three games in Week 3, defeating Augusta in between losses to Ashland and Robertson County. Fairview is scheduled to compete in the Smokey Mountain Christmas Classic Monday, Dec. 20-Wednesday, Dec. 22. 
 
12. Lewis County (2-7): The Lions split four games in Week 3, claiming back-to-back wins over East Carter and Berea. Lewis County's two wins in Week 3 were recorded between losses to Boyd County and Whitley County. The Lions are scheduled to visit former state champion Scott County in Week 4. 
 
13. East Carter (0-6): Still looking for its first win in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season season, East Carter suffered losses to Greenup County, Lewis County, Montgomery County and Owen County during Week 3. The Raiders aren't scheduled to be back on the court until a matchup at Rose Hill Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 28. 
 
14. Morgan County (1-7): Continuing its slide in Week 3, Morgan County dropped games to Elliott County, Powell County and Floyd Central. The Cougars are slated to visit 14th Region member Buckhorn in Week 4. 
 
15. Rose Hill Christian (1-7): The Royals landed in the win column after opening the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season 0-7. In Week 3, Rose Hill Christian dropped games to Hannan (W.Va.) and St. Joseph Central (Ohio) before beating Covenant (W.Va.). The Royals have upcoming games scheduled versus Boyd County and Floyd Central.
 
16. Menifee County (1-5): The Wildcats claimed their first win after opening the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season 0-5. Following back-to-back losses to 61st District rivals Rowan County and Bath County in Week 3, Menifee County pulled away to beat Jenkins 83-69. The Wildcats have upcoming games scheduled versus Montgomery County, St. Patrick and Nicholas County.
