NKY's big boys collide in potential district championship preview

Records: Ryle (5-2), Dixie Heights (4-3)

BGP Ranking: Ryle (#5 in 6A), Dixie Heights (unranked in 6A)

Series History: Tied at 14 all

Table Setter: Dixie Heights hosts Ryle this week in what should be a highly competitive affair and possible sneak peak at a district championship game. The Raiders and red Colonels have combined for five losses this season, but all five have come to ranked teams.

Ryle has shined on defense since giving up 24 points to Lexington Catholic in a season opening loss. Over the last six games, they've only allowed 9.6 points per contest, including a stellar showing in defeat two weeks ago against St. Xavier that earned the Raiders more respect than any win on their schedule thus far. That defense could be the edge that Ryle needs against a Dixie Heights offense that has struggled to put points on the board against the better teams they've faced, like Beechwood (21-14 loss), CovCath (24-8 loss) and Cooper (19-10 loss).

Be it a lack of creativity, or ➡insert your own explanation here, the Colonels' offense hasn't quite lived up to preseason expectations, despite featuring more talent on that side of the ball than arguably anyone in NKY. The centerpiece of that unit is quarterback Logan Landers. He had one of his best performances of the season last week against Simon Kenton with over 300 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Maintaining that form this week would go a long way toward snagging a win for the Colonels.

These two met twice last year, splitting the series. Ryle won the first game by four scores with the help of six DH turnovers. The Colonels exacted some revenge in the playoffs, as Landers went off for 400 yards and five touchdowns.

I agree with the opening post here - the Dixie offense just seems out of sync. They have great weapons, a very good line, a fantastic and underrated QB in Logan Landers.

This looks like a bad matchup for Dixie as the strength of their team under Coach Brossart is centered around strong line play. I think Ryle matches up there with Dixie. But I can flip that right back at Ryle. Dixie will go toe to toe with them at the line of scrimmage. The Ryle offense has struggled scoring points against the best teams they have faced.

I see this as a low scoring struggle. I want to pick Ryle but I have this nagging thought that Dixie's offense is overdue, and they have big play weapons that one mistake against will cost their opponent 6 points.

I am going with Ryle 17-14 but this game is a coin toss.

I agree.  It will come down to handling the ball.

Series is tied 14 all and 6-6 in the Dave Brossart era at Dixie. These teams are pretty evenly matched. I’m not sure I’m sold Ryle’s offense is that much better than Dixie’s. Both teams have only eclipsed 30 points three times. Both teams have been stingy defensively. Both teams have had similar schedules. I agree this will be a low scoring affair and the first team to blink may lose. If Dixie brings it’s penalty problem with it, they are in for a long night. If Ryle can’t move the ball and keep Dixie’s athletes off the field and sustain drives, Dixie wins. I’ll go with Dixie and the better QB, at home.

Dixie needs to keep including all players in the offense to win.  The 2 man routes that they used against Cooper and CCH don't work.  Also, the health of Rohlman will come into play.  He left the SK game late in the game with a knee injury.  It didn't look or sound good as he was screaming before going down.  He's a physical runner and a key player in the secondary.
