Class 2A

Lexington Christian Academy and Beechwood wasted little time making statements that they are prepared to challenge for the 2A title. LCA went to DeSales and earned a hard fought victory while Beechwood also went on the road to Corbin and stunned the Redhounds at Campbell Field. Both teams look to keep the momentum going with equally huge games this week, once again on the road. Somerset made short work of Whitley County and will eye a win over a ranked Williamsburg team as well. Mayfield was on the wrong end of a beating at the hands of McCracken County and will have no walk in the park against rival Graves County. 

1. Somerset vs. 1A #8 Williamsburg

2. Lexington Christian Academy at 4A #7 Lexington Catholic

3. Beechwood at 5A #1 Covington Catholic

4. Mayfield at 5A Graves County

5. Breathitt County at 3A Powell County

6. West Carter vs. 4A Boyd County

7. Caldwell County at 3A Union County

8. Danville at 1A #9 Hazard

9. Murray vs. 3A Trigg County

10. McLean County at Butler County

What does everything think it would take to leapfrog Somerset this week (aside from Somerset losing)?

If Beechwood can knock off CovCath or LCA puts a hurting on LexCath would that be worthy enough?

If Beechwood upsets Cov Cath they are hands down the clear cut #1 in class 2A to me. A win over the defending 5A state champions would make it impossible to be anything other than #1. Just don’t see any way that happens. Somerset will be #1 in 2A all year assuming they stay healthy. I don’t see anyway they lose a game this year. I’m more interested in seeing when/if West Carter can jump Breathitt County. Sloppy performance for Breathitt last week and West Carter played nearly flawless. If WC can have a convincing win over a 4A could they jump into the top 5? Also, how far would Mayfield fall if they were to start the season 0-2? Lots of questions in class 2A right now outside of the top 3.

Oh LCA can absolutely beat Somerset this season.  Beechwood could beat the Jumpers as well.   Somerset has a nice team,  and they could win it all again.  But it will take more than just staying healthy and showing up.

Somerset will be #1 until October 16 when they face Lexington Christian. That is the first real threat to them not being #1. Teams 2-10 is where movement can happen in the 2A rankings.

LCA won out right on a last second FG over Lexington Catholic.

Beechwood lost by 2 points to Covington Catholic.

Somerset ran the clock against Williamsburg.

An argument could be made for any of the three.

Somerset has been sloppy but dominant through two weeks.

Beechwood hung play for play with the best opponent played by any of the three.

Lexington Christian has the most impressive win of the early season.

 

How will next weeks polls look?

No change in the top 3 for me. All look strong to start the year.

LCA has more impressive wins than Somerset so far this season but Somerset has to remain #1 until they are beaten.
